About the Author
Ryan M. Niemiec, PhD, PsyD, is Education Director of the VIA Institute on Character, the nonprofit positive psychology organization that educates people about the latest science and practice of character strengths. He is a licensed psychologist, certified coach, international workshop leader, and is Adjunct Professor at Xavier University, Cincinnati, OH. He is co-author of Positive Psychology at the Movies (2008; 2013) and Movies and Mental Illness (2005; 2010). In 2011, Ryan received the Distinguished Early Career Award from the American Psychological Association (Division 46). Ryan has led several hundred mindfulness meditation groups for clinical and nonclinical populations over the last decade, and has delivered mindfulness retreats, seminars, and workshops to a variety of groups including physicians, counselors, religious leaders, and the general public. Ryan created Mindfulness- Based Strengths Practice (MBSP) out of his ongoing passion for the two topics. MBSP marks the first, structured character strengths program. He has enjoyed training the early pioneers in this approach. He is a member of Being Peace Sangha, just outside of Cincinnati, Ohio. This book is a must have resource for everyone willing to learn more about mindfulness and character strengths and especially to those who teach or want to teach either mindfulness, character strengths or both.This is the only book I am aware of that truly incorporates science of positive psychology, mindfulness and character strengths. It gives you even detailed directions on how to use this program, teach it, and how to adopt it to different levels and audiences (school, business, etc.)It is obvious that the author has years of experience as a trainer and facilitator. I love how the author seamlessly weaved practice of mindfulness with character strengths.CD is absolutely great. An excellent value added to the book. For the very first time while practicing mindfulness, I was able to clearly connect my meditation with my strengths. This is a great and interesting book, I never knew there was so much research and information on this stuff we take for granted. I had many an ahaa moment and love the concept of learning someone's strength to inspire them to use that to get motivated.

Mindfulness and Character Strengths provided sage insight for audiences who wish to apply awareness strategies into their practice. Whether applying in a group session or on an individual basis, the practices shared in this publication offered myriad ideas for creating an effective framework. Although many of the "best practices" utilized in the book were admirable, it was a bit too "academic" for many tastes outside the academic environment -- flexibility in style could have been emphasized more. Overall...great ideas, story references and "how to" knowledge.
This book is a mine of information concerning the use of mindfulness and character strengths. By applying the ideas and exercises in this book it becomes possible to reach a transformation in our daily life.
