This book has 100s of birds from North America listed, with multiple feathers from each and a bit about feather origins and morphology as well as where the birds are located in the USA. Unfortunately, I was hoping for some sort of description and more identifying characteristics of each bird, such as feather measurements etc. there are many feathers that look very similar... It's still unclear as to what bird feathers I have found. It would also be nice to have a photo of the bird itself, on each page. Guess I'll keep searching for my perfect feather identification book.

This book contains just about everything you would want to know about bird feathers. It has a tutorial in the front that tells you how to identify what part of the body a feather came from, some of the functional differences in feathers, different wing and flight feather shapes and provides a lot of educational material for somebody wanting to teach a class or just learn more about what a feather says about a bird. I have been able to identify a bird from a single feather through the use of this book, although it took a lot of searching. The book is organized by bird category, not by feather size or feather shape so if you are trying to identify what type of bird your feather came from and do not have a clue as to the general type of bird it can take quite a bit of searching. After repeated use I was eventually able to make some educated guesses using feather shape and color to predict which group of birds I thought the feather came from, so identification becomes easier with time. Though the book doesn't include every species, it has a sizable list, with many of the most common species. There are photographs of the flight feathers from each bird and measurements are provided. In some cases smaller contour feathers are also included in the layout. Both the measurements and inclusion of body feathers is very helpful, especially if you find a pile of mystery feathers clustered together. Highly recommend this book to anybody who wants to know more about birds.

I'm sitting at my desk which has an old ink well filled with 7 feathers I've collected in the past few months from hikes in the western foothills. Three of these feathers are tan and barred. After receiving "Bird Feathers" by Scott and McFarland, I now know that two are primaries and one is a secondary - and I know the purposes as well. I'm also fairly sure that one is from a Sharp-shinned Hawk, but I'm not positive. I'm not even certain as to the feathers on the front cover of the book, the most detailed photos presented. And I either have a feather from an Anna's Hummingbird or a Western Bluebird. Hence, my predicament in being a real amateur and having such a book.Beautifully written and well photographed, the book still has a fault and it is not entirely the authors'. As an amateur nature photographer, I know how difficult it is to photograph feathers, especially feathers with color. If it were a perfect world, the book would be twice as large and the feathers would be life-sized and the colors would be true. However, if one takes a Western Bluebird and a Western Inland Scrub Jay as examples, the blues are distinctive and much more "blue" than what is represented in the book.Under a high powered (Verilux)lamp or outdoors, one can see that the feathers that are photographers do have blue in them, but the gray part of the feathers predominates and makes the variations very difficult to see. This makes identification difficult though not impossible.I highly recommend the book even with these "distractions." Nothing compares, and if it makes you "study" harder, then the book has accomplished an unintended consequence. Meanwhile, it IS well written and explains more than I ever knew. Combined with the photographs, it's superb.

I bought this book after seeing the cover and recognizing a feather that has been in my collection for years. What a treat to be able to identify ALL my feathers at last! And SO much better than squinting at inadequate photos on the [...]Even better, this book begins with a few chapters designed to explain the structure(s) and function(s) of feathers--and how they power a bird in flight or help it survive. These are well-written, well-illustrated, and vastly interesting.Yes, there is technical language, largely biological terms, but each word is explained; you need not have a BS in physiology to understand them. In fact, I think a high school student interested in birding or biology would find this perfectly accessible. No doubt about it, feathers--and a birds--are elegant things, and this book tells you why.If you are a desultory or devoted feather collector, outdoors-man/woman, amateur naturalist or professional, you will enjoy having this book on your shelf.

I bought this for my ornithologist friend and he is delighted. It's a unique way to identify birds and includes interesting information if you enjoy birds. He thought there were a few feathers that had been matched to the wrong birds but we decided that later editions would include edits for errors. Mostly the errors do not detract from the book which is well organized and informative.

What a delight to have this tool. This is the birdwatcher's geocaching. I have spent many years picking up feathers and testing my ability to identify the bird from which it has come. I enjoy it personally but am also a field biologist who uses that data to describe details of a discovery, including bird remains that have been left as a result of predation or impact from transmission wires or wind turbines. I have since purchased 4 more copies for my colleagues and field staff. Other than the unfortunate mislabeled plate on page 30, I have found the book accurate. I believe the authors approach to depict flight feathers was an appropriate choice as they are the most telling of species. The more we learn, the more we respect nature's gifts. Thank you for your tremendous tedious efforts.

Note: Amazon continues to feature reviews of earlier editions. What immediately follows is my review of the 50th anniversary edition published today, January 24, 2017. What then follows is my review of an earlier edition.* * *This is the 50th anniversary edition of a book first published in 1967. Jim Collins provides the Foreword and Zachary First the Afterword. In my opinion, Peter Drucker (1909-2005) is the most influential business thinker as indicated by the endless list of other thought leaders who continue to acknowledge his value and significance to their own work. He always insisted on referring to himself as a “student” or “bystander.” With all due respect to his wishes, I have always viewed him as a pioneer who surveyed and defined dimensions of the business world that no one else had previously explored.Consider this passage in the Foreword: “Here are ten lessons I learned from Peter Drucker and this book, and that I offer as a small portal of entry into the mind of the greatest management thinker off all time.” These are the lessons that Collins cites and discusses:1. First, manage thyself.2. Do what you’re made for.3. Work how you work best (and let others do the same).4. Count your time, and make it count.5. Prepare better meetings.6. Don’t make a hundred decisions when one will do.7. Find your one big distinctive impact.8. Stop what you would not start.9. Run lean.10. Be useful.“He was in the end, Collins adds, "the highest level of what a teacher can be: a role model of the very ideas he taught, a walking testament to his teachings in the tremendous lasting effect of his own life.”As was true of Collins and will be true 0f everyone else who reads one of the several editions, they will have their own take-aways. Drucker provides a framework in the Introduction, stressing while discussing the importance of eight specific practices that all great business and non-profit CEOs are committed to, such as asking “What needs to be done?” and “What is right for the enterprise?” The first two enable them to obtain the information they need. The next four help them to convert this knowledge into effective action:3. Develop action plans.4. Take responsibility for decisions [and their consequences].5. Take responsibility for communicating.6. Are focused on opportunities rather on problems. The last two ensure that the entire organization feels responsible and accountable7. Run productive meetings.8. Think and feel “we” rather than “I.”Yes, these are basic and obvious practices but they were not five decades ago. Until Drucker, thinking about management lacked order, structure, clarity, and focus. Borrowing a phrase from Oliver Wendell Holmes, Drucker developed thinking about management to “the other side of complexity.” To paraphrase, Albert Einstein, Drucker made management “as simple as possible but no simpler.”In the Introduction Peter Drucker concludes, “We’ve just covered eight practices of effective executives. I’m going to throw in one final, bonus practice. This one’s so important that I’ll elevate it to the level of a rule: [begin italics] Listen first, speak last [end italics]”...And, like every discipline, effectiveness [begin italics] can [end italics] and [begin italics] must [end italics] be earned.”The title of this review is a portion of one of Peter Drucker's most important insights: "The most serious mistakes are not being made as a result of wrong answers. The true dangerous thing is asking the wrong question."* * *I first read this book when it was originally published in 1967 and have since re-read it several times because, in my opinion, it provides some of Peter Drucker's most important insights on how to "get the right work done and done the right way." By nature an "executive" is one who "executes," producing a desired result (an "effect") that has both impact and value. As Drucker once observed in an article that appeared in Harvard Business Review at least 40 years ago, "There is surely nothing quite so useless as doing with great efficiency what should not be done at all." Therefore, the effective executive must develop sound judgment. Difficult - sometimes immensely difficult - decisions must be made. Here are eight practices that Drucker recommended 45 years ago:o Ask, "what needs to be done?"o Ask, "What is right for the enterprise?"o Develop an action plano Take responsibility for decisions.o Take responsibility for communications.o Focus on opportunities rather than on problems.o Conduct productive meetings.o Think in terms of first-person PLURAL pronouns ("We" rather than "I").The first two practices give executives the knowledge they need; the next four help them convert this knowledge into effective action; the last two ensure that the entire organization feels responsible and accountable, and will thus be more willing to become engaged. "I'm going to throw in one final, bonus practice. This one's so important that I'll elevate it to the level of a rule: [begin italics] Listen first, speak last." [end italics]This volume consists of eight separate but interdependent essays that begin with "Effectiveness Can Be Learned" and conclude with "Effective Decisions." Actually, there is a "Conclusion" in which Drucker asserts that "Effectiveness Must Be Learned." I agree. The essays are arranged in a sequence that parallels a learning process that prepares an executive to "assume responsibility, rather than to act the subordinate, satisfied only if he `pleases the boss.' In focusing himself and his vision on contribution the executive, in other words, has to think through purposes and ends rather than means alone."I highly recommend this to all executives who need an easy-to-read collection of reminders of several basic but essential insights from one of the most important business thinkers, Peter Drucker. I also presume to suggest that they, in turn, urge each of their direct reports to obtain a copy and read it. The last time I checked, Amazon sells a paperbound edition for only $11.55. Its potential value is incalculable.

Excellent perspective, insight and coaching for development. I was amazed at the insight Peter Drucker had considering when this was originally written back in the 1960's. Other books that have been written even in the last couple years echo some of what is in here. The topics and advice are still very relevant today even though some of the landscape has changed with the computer and internet. I would say that this is still on point for today and should be required reading for any aspiring professional in a large organization.

“Executives are not paid for doing things they like to do. They are paid for getting the right things done.”If you have read anything on leadership or management in the past few decades, you are probably already familiar with Peter Drucker. I first heard about Drucker a few years back while reading a book by a college president and over time Drucker’s name kept popping up everywhere. It was difficult to determine which book to read first. He has written dozens of books, and all of them have been universally praised. I chose The Effective Executive because it seemed to have a simple, straightforward message and it was under 200 pages. However, I was a bit weary because the book was first published in 1967.First, this book is amazing. It packed with great, applicable information. I actually think this book is more relevant today that it was when it was first written.Second, the message is amazing. The overall message is simple, “effectiveness can be learned and must be earned.” There may be some individuals better suited for leadership roles, but to be an effective manager you need to develop the skill of effectiveness.I will definitely be picking up more Drucker books in the future. Here are some gems:“Organizations are held together by information rather than by ownership or command.”“Working on the right things is what makes knowledge work effective.”“All in all, the effective executive tries to be himself.”

My first book by Drucker and I loved it. While it is clear how old this book is by the sole references to men as executives, the wisdom has not aged. I really appreciate the focus he encourages and emphasis on specific actions like time recoding. I could easily see myself coming back to this book.

I'm a business book junkie, but this is the granddaddy of all executive self-awareness books. It's also still the best.Although his examples are dated, Drucker still lays out the cleanest explanation and game plan for anyone who finds themself in the position of leading a company. This book is about both leadership and management, and if you don't understand the difference, all the more reason to buy it.

While the words might be dated, the ideas are not. There is something to be said about being effective and doing the best thing. I encourage you to invest your time and be effective by reading this book.

I discovered Christian Williams when I serendipitously came across his video journal of his singlehanded sailing to Hawaii and back on YouTube. Being close to his age I related deeply to him, not only his love of sailing, but his love of reading and history. He is aware of and part of "The Great Conversation" as am I. Aren't we all, as he might ask? His narration is enchanting and real. His book doesn't go a step further than his video log, it plunges to the depths of who he is, what he is doing, and who we all are. His insights into the human condition are profound and he writes with a master's touch making the complex simple, the difficult manageable, and the meaning of who we are and what we do, ( something so ethereal) almost touchable. He tells of his boat's diesel engine, a converted three cylinder tractor motor, as a tractor motor "sentenced forever to plow an ocean that won't hold a furrow." He connects things in a charming and meaningful way. In this book he teaches us much about sailing, the do's and the don'ts. He is transparent with his mistakes and humble in his triumphs, which his journey, video, and book certainly are. As I read I so wanted to be with him and then I realized I was. Perhaps that is his point and goal. A lovely and meaningful read.

Reading sailing books has long been my obsession. I bought "Alone Together" without much enthusiasm, as my current reading interests are now somewhat distanced from sailing. However, CW's book deserves a well earned-place in the "classic sailing" narratives. The book is outstanding because of CW's keen observational powers on human nature and history. But the book is also an excellent manual of offshore sailing. CW's abilities as a sailor shines through. The book contains many usefull tidbits of sailing knowledge.I wonder if Thelonius had a traditional topping lift. The mini-crisis that ocurred when the halyard was lost could have bee averted using the topping lift as halyard. Inconveniencies when reefing etc are minor. At least until landfall.CW is also a polished wordsmith.I plan to read this book againMarcos GallacherSailing Vessel "Mar Dulce"Buenos Aires, Argentina

I first discovered Christian Williams as many have, on YouTube, sailing his boat "Thelonious" singlehanded to Kauai, Hawaii. The first thing I noticed is that Christian is a genuinely nice person and he loves what he is doing. He is happy to explain it all with poetic prowess. As a trailer sailor, I long to sail singlehanded to Hawaii, but probably wont. I can however go along with him, and he welcomes our company. Every few months it seems that he is putting out a new video on Youtube showing what he is doing in his sailing endeavors (building a small pram, explaining how a sailboat autopilot works, fixing his fuel tanks) but my favorite must be just him filming himself meandering about the boat as it sails wing on wing, cooking, reading, navigating, stumbling. When I discovered he had written a few books on his experiences I immediately bought this one, "Alone Together". Initially I put it in cue to read after the Horatio Hornblower series (you forgot to recommend these fantastic sailing novels too, Christian) But I could not wait to get to Alone Together. I immediately cracked it open, like one of his splattering bottles of wine. Savoring the sweet dose of escape from the ridiculous reality we now find ourselves in, I let Christian take me along in Thelonious through this book. What a trip! When YouTube fails to satisfy your craving for this gentleman's adventures, buy this book and prolong the enjoyment of your life.

This is an absolutely wonderful, joyful, hilarious book with jokes on every page. Williams has created a new form -- taking the reader along on his trip and talking him through all the intricacies of sailing (which is incredibly interesting and fun to learn if you're not much of a sailor - and probably even more fun if you are) but also going on wonderful tangents on literature, philosophy and a lifetime of reading and experience. I have never read a book like this - closest I can come is Zen And The Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, which was very important to me when I was younger. A word also should be said about the author's style - which is formal and friendly and very very funny. If you like Mencken, you will laugh a lot - though Williams is not as mean as Mencken and seems to have nothing but affection for his world. There are wonderful descriptions of loneliness, of storms, of battered masts, broken steering wheels and impending hurricanes - and hilarious accounts of just sitting in the ocean bobbing up and down. For those who know Kauai, his insights there are pretty joyful also. The book is a wonderful celebration of a great adventure. It makes you want to get off your ass and do something extraordinary, but it doesn't make you miserable if you can't muster the courage. Very generous, very funny. A wonderful achievement. Highly recommended.

You don't have to be a sailor to enjoy this book because Christian has written a wonderful accounting of his voyage in a way that any non-sailor can also understand and enjoy. His story is more then about just sailing, which my wife also and I happen to enjoy. Just so happens that we even own that same make and model boat that he used to carry him to Hawai'i. So if you're a sailor you can relate to much in the story. Don't think for one moment that you'll read a chapter or two and then put it down to pick it up later either. You'll want to see what is over the next ocean swell with Christian because he invites you to join him for a wonderful, sometimes scary and in the end a life examining sail. I read it all over a short vacation trip and highly recommend it.

Between the endless sources on the Internet, other books I've purchased, and even videogames, this book is what I turn to most when I want to give myself a guitar lesson. Spending as little as 15 minutes in an evening, I can learn something new and pluck out a new tune, but the best part for me so far is that I'm able to do this by actually reading music! While online tabs are a fun and (often-) free resource, I really wanted to be able to pick a guitar up the way I used to pick up my oboe as a kid and be able to understand how the notes on the staff relate to the instrument and just have at it. This book takes me on a gradual and intuitive journey that incorporates the reading of music and playing techniques in easy, perfectly paced increments that don't leave me feeling frustrated or overwhelmed. If I let myself get a little out of practice, I can just take myself to the previous lesson, refresh, and hop right back into the curriculum. It has been years since I've played or otherwise been personally involved in music, but these books have made it accessible and much less intimidating. In addition to a segment out of this book, my ideal practice session also includes "finger aerobics" exercises out of another book, and a lesson out of my guitar music theory book. With this book as the foundation, I feel like I have a perfect system to learn to play with the more complete knowledge I wanted.

As an adult - 40 years old - who is just learning guitar I really enjoy this book. Is not only helping learn guitar but helping with reading music. Started out trying to use "Yousician" app, but it is just reading tabs and more of a "Guitar Hero" type learning approach. I feel this book offers a more meaningful learning experience.

Great book. My instructor told me to buy book one but that was not available, so I bought the 3-in-1. This is loosely followed, so the hokey songs aren't the only ones I'm learning. They have to be hokey to use only the notes and strings presented for the lesson, so that is not a criticism but a comment of "oh well, let's get through this to learn the lesson. "A great feature is the plastic binding that allows this book to lay open flat or folded completely over.Even when the instructor gives another assignment, I find it helpful to check information in the book for sticky spots. Several teachers said that this is the best basic book on the market and I believe them. I love this book.

This is actually a pretty good book for a beginner. I've messed around with a guitar for years, only using Tab. I decided I wanted to learn to read music notation, and this book fit the bill nicely. The first "book" is pretty basic, and if you have more than zero knowledge already, you'll blow through it in 5 minutes. But the 2nd and 3rd books have some classic (i.e. not copyrighted anymore) songs that worked well for teaching me to read notes. Overall, a decent book for beginners. The learning curve is not too steep, but there is still plenty of substance (in books 2 and 3).

I use this book to teach guitar to students from age 10-18 years. It is a complete method book and I found myself trying out some of the songs and exercises just for fun even though I've played guitar for 35 years. Would definitely recommend this over the previous guitar series I used as it is more sophisticated for the teenaged student musician.

Super EASY to follow. I haven’t even taken advantage of the on line tutorials yet but I’m am SO happy with this format. I know NOTHING about guitar playing, yet after just the 3rd lesson, my kids noticed and were as impressed as I was at how quickly I was able to make “music” (something that didn’t sound like me killing a cat with weed whacked) with my acoustic guitar. It even had a page on tuning your guitar which I desperately needed.

 As expected.

This book is written to be used as a tool for teachers to work with their students, and I feel that as such the authors have opted to not provide some useful explanation. You can use this book to teach yourself (that's what I'm using it for) but you might need to find sources outside this book for specific explanations. The first page shows a picture of guitars and labels some parts of the guitar. That's the whole page, there is no explanation of what the parts do or anything, just tells you what they're called. And then that's it, no more explanation about the guitar. A couple pages later it talks about playing position. In particular it has two pictures of someone holding a pick and no further explanation. No description of how you're supposed to do it, no list of common mistakes in holding a pick. A couple pages later, it shows E F and G on the high E string and then suddenly a few lines of sheet music. It doesn't say what the purpose of this sheet music is, presumably once you see a line of music you're supposed to practice it, but it doesn't say that anywhere in the book. It doesn't say how long to practice it or when to move on to the next step. It hasn't yet explained the correct way to press down on the strings. It does provide a couple tips on how to finger the strings after these initial exercises, but again does not provide common mistakes, etc.I think if you have absolutely no experience with guitar and no knowledge of music in general, this book will not provide you with everything you need to know. So in that sense, I would say it is not comprehensive. But for my purposes, I think it's a great resource. I already have knowledge of some music theory. I know why you skip a fret between F and G already, so it's ok that the book doesn't explain it. I know that finger pain is normal for a beginner, so the book doesn't need to tell me. What this book provides me with is the framework for what I should be learning in the order that I should be learning it, and it's providing me with a great selection of music/exercises to practice in a structured manner.
