As a watercolor artist and a firm believer in Christ's love and redemption, I have often felt marginalized within the Christian community. One establishment wouldn't carry my work unless I put a Bible verse on a plaque at the bottom of the frame. Others wanted me to put obvious symbols of Christianity into my work. Still others struggled with the whole concept of a Christian being an artist and could not understand what value that call could possible have in the Kingdom. How could art be evangelical? What was its value in the face of recession or hunger, or sickness, or pain? In other words, art was frivolous and not part of the "real world".This little book was like a balm to my soul. It healed all the scarred places where words have wounded. It is a gem and a gift to artists in all disciplines. It re-enforced what I had silently believed and brought light to the dimmed and darkened places within me that I didn't even know were there. I am on the second reading and I'm hoping it will continue to bring a new freedom to my work. I highly recommend it for its words of affirmation from a Godly perspective..

Book Review: Art for God's SakeAuthor: Philip Graham RykenFormat: SoftbackTopic: Art TheoryScope: A Christian Primer on Art Theory and CriticismPurpose: To encourage Christians to see art correctly and Christian Artists to make art that glorifies the creator.Structure: There are 6 chapters in the book and an introduction. They are all really short essays covering a topic about how God sees art and our responsibility. What it does well: *This is a great primer. Ryken does give the reader a desire to promote the arts.*Ryken really clings to promoting the arts "for God's sake". Every point he makes is pointing to this larger goal.*The overall feeling of the book is supremely hopeful. Ryken doesn't spend too much time chastising the Church for treating artists badly or being pessimistic about the current state of art today. Instead, he continually points out that artists glorify God and the Church can partner with God in using art to bring about the kingdom in a real and true way. What it lacks: *This book is really short. Don't expect a definitive statement that covers every possible scenario.*The author uses the term "calling" in a way I struggle with. He explains that God "calls" artists to be artists. I do not doubt that God has specifically asked some people to become artists, but it seems that our everyday experience is one more of gifting and glorifying God through choosing which gifts we will employ. Not a big deal, but I don't really see this idea of "calling" in the Bible in this way. Some quick highlights: "Art is always tempted to glory in itself, and nearly every form of art has been to communicate values that are contrary to Scripture. Art is as fallen as any other aspect of human existence."-12"Art is an imaginative activity, and in the act of creating, we reflect the mind of our Maker."-24"Artists also avoid idolizing the arts by resisting the temptation to isolation and instead living in the Christian community, where worship is given to God alone, where a God-centered orientation to life is the basis for daily discipleship, and where every earthly calling finds its true significance in relation to the higher calling of God."-49"...making art is an expression of our love--love for God and love for our neighbor."50Recommendation: This is a good book. I recommend it to anyone struggling to become an artist, and to churches (small groups, pastoral staff) to help learn how to encourage the artistic among us.

I am very concerned with our present culture's definitions of beauty since "repulsive" is fast becoming the new normal. This is one of the topics Philip Ryken addresses in his booklet, Art for God's Sake: A Call to Recover the Arts. It's a manifesto for artists of all types to do what they do for the glory of God, basically debunking the addage that art needs no reason for being, i.e, It's just "Art for art's sake." Not only is the book meant to encourage artists in their calling, it is also meant to give nonartists a short introduction to thinking Christianly about the arts. Some reviewers at Goodreads said it was too simplistic, but for someone like me (with no art background), the simplicity was a huge plus.My favorite quote:"The problem with some modern and postmodern art is that it seeks to offer truth at the expense of beauty. It tells the truth only about ugliness and alienation, leaving out the beauty of creation and redemption. A good deal of so-called Christian art tends to have the opposite problem. It tries to show beauty without admitting the truth about sin, and to that extent it is false - dishonest about the tragic implications of our depravity. Think of all the bright, sentimental landscapes that portray an ideal world unaffected by the Fall, or the light, cheery melodies that characterize the Christian life as one of undiminished happiness. Such a world may be nice to imagine, but it is not the world God sent his Son to save."

This translation of the oldest known version of Daodejing is fascinating. I've read dozens of translations of the modern versions and the same author's translation of the Mah-Wang-Dui text of the Daodejing, and this one gives another exhilarating glimpse into the evolution of a seminal book in world thought. Of particular interest to me are the instances in which this older text differs from later versions in ways that can be best explained by errors of copying which have led to changes in the meaning of a some of the lines. Many of these lines are easier to understand without the copying errors. (Go figure!) This book is required reading for any English-language reader who wants to develop a rich and layered understanding of the meanings of the Daodejing.

This book is the earliest version of the tao in existence. a translation of the guodian texts. Its somewhat different than other versions i have read and i have read a few .It also has a few lines not known to later versions of the tao. that was the reason i bought it. and has different wording some lines moved around its interesting to say the least . I am grateful the author has made this available.my problem was the commentary was so utterly boring and only interesting to someone who's doing some kind of in depth almost obsessive analysis of the history of the writing of the tao and also to much speculation on who the author / author's were/ was?. it was rather moot .The main point i got out of this was that scholars have argued over the date of the tao te ching. most saying its a more recent invention younger than we thought.BUT with the discovery of the goudian copy of the tao we know all the scholars were wrong about it. its much much older.whats with all scholars always saying ancient historians are all liars/wrong/fake/ ? And to just assume they are inherently mistaken? well here we have the tao te ching is 3rd or 4th century ! just like the official histories say it was. Also most scholars thought the Tao te ching was written over time in parts ( see D.C Lau's ritigns on this )Well again they are wrong here is an almost complete tao and its basically the same as much later version in fact if anything things have been taken away over time not added !

This version of the Dao De Jing is nothing short of amazing but before I get into why I think this version is so amazing I want to give you a short intro to the "Dao De Jing" in general. The Dao De Jing is believed to have been written around 400-500 BC in China by a man called "Lao Tze" which means "old master" in ancient Chinese(the Dao De Jing is sometimes called "The Lao Tze" after it's author). It is generally accepted that the original work has been added to several times by several authors resulting in the version of the Dao De Jing that most people familiar with Daoism are familiar with. Now for a short intro to this version, this is the oldest version of the Dao De Jing to be discovered, it's believed to date to about 300 BC. 3 big differences between this version of the Dao De Jing and other versions is (1) this version has only 31 not 81 "chapters"(poems), (2) many of the remaining 31 chapters are missing several lines of text present in the other versions, (3) and of the remaining lines in the remaining chapters, some are very different from the equivalent lines in other versions, possibly because of copying erros or intentional later rewriting. And for these 3 reasons this version of the Dao De Jing has a more cohesive feeling to it, chapter to chapter and the work feels like it has beginning a middle and an end, also I think these differences leave a less cryptic and clearer text compared to other versions of the Dao De Jing which are notoriously cryptic(they really are, I've read a few other versions and there are parts where I think to myself there is no way this poem actually means anything whoever wrote this is messing with me).And for some random musings on this book, sometimes when I read it I imagine what it's author might have experienced in their life, like war, natural disasters, court politics, feelings of awe when in nature. The author definitely was interested in finding the best philosophical approach to things, and had a knack for articulating their thoughts. So often when I read this I'm struck with amazement, amusement, and tenderness it seems i'm "gotten" every time. And in short these are the people I would recommend this to; anybody who has read another version of the Dao De Jing and thought it was interesting as well as anyone who has read another version and was frustrated by it's cryptic passages, and contrary to the other reviewers I would in fact recommend this to someone who is unfamiliar with Daoist philosophy or who hasn't read any other versions of the Dao De Jing.

The book is excellent book, a must have if you are interested on Daoism.

Known as the Bamboo Slip Laozi, this book is based upon the strips unearthed at a tomb in Guodian, 1993, that can be dated at 300 BCE. This is the earliest find we have to the TaoTe Ching (Daodejing). This book is mainly of interest to the Chinese scholar.Although the finding appears to be complete, the verse count is only 31 rather than the 81 verses commonly expected. The characters are painted on strips of bamboo rather than upon silk.It uses more archaic characters than later versions and even the character for Dao is sometimes different. All of this brings up many questions with few answers . . . but, like the message itself, answers aren't the point, the process is.
