Having the privilege of knowing author Rebecca, I could write for hours about her perseverance, how inspiring and strong she is and how to me she is essentially a superhero. But none of these things, (as related to her disabilities) define who she is for even a minute, nor do they define this book. What starts as a truly unique couldn't write this sh*t if you tried kind of story, quickly reveals itself to be full of humor, humanity and the universal truths and questions we all face. I felt as if I was sitting across from Rebecca being happily bombarded by her contagious humor and zest for life. Her personality, honesty and relatable experiences jump off each page, prompting the reader to consider not only their own blessings and challenges, but the larger questions about being the best friends, sisters/brothers, lovers and people we can be.We all stand to learn so much from those like Rebecca who are brave enough not only to live life SO large but also to share each moment so honestly with the world. Every anecdote in this book is a reminder of how adaptable, resilient and downright loving we can all choose to be when given the choice. Not a light read to be sure, but as only Rebecca can, this book takes the scariest and loneliest aspects of our lives and creates space for laughter, love and hope. A GREAT read.

I can relate to Rebecca’s dread of getting her vision tests, knowing already what they will say: “your vision has gotten worse again.” From about the age of 5 to 35, I dreaded the eye doctor because I always got the same news: “your vision has gotten worse again, here are thicker glasses and stronger, less bearable, contact lenses for you to endure. Have a nice day!” Even though they never told me I was going blind, I certainly seemed to be in the express lane for it. Because of that, I have always been fascinated by other people’s stories of vision loss or of blind people, I guess because someday I figured I could very well be among them, at the rate I was going.I read this book expecting a story of what it would be like to find out you are going blind and deaf, but what I got was so much more. What I found was not really a story of coping with disabilities, but more a story of living life to the fullest, regardless of your circumstances. Rebecca is funny, intelligent, compassionate, and extremely athletic; accomplishing things already that most fully able-bodied people never even come close to achieving in their lives. I have no doubt, given her strong network of family and friends, and her amazing perspective and perseverance, that she will continue to thrive, no matter what path her eyes and ears decide to go down.Truly a remarkable woman and I thank her for this uplifting read and wish her the very best, if she ever reads this! Highly recommended!

Rebecca Alexander's "Not Fade Away" is a journey that's filled with a full range of emotions from sad and shocking to funny and hopeful. At 19, she received the news that she had Usher Syndrome Type III. It's a rare genetic mutation with profound consequences--loss of sight and sound. But, even at 12, when an ophthalmologist told her parents she would need a guide dog by 20, Rebecca never simply gave in to the diagnosis at hand. Along the journey, we see the familiar life of many teenagers including possibly ourselves. From her parents' divorce to her first romance to moving far away for college, so many events in this young life ring true. And she manages to give us a valuable insight into a world that so few of us understand. As a child, I recall a bizarre conversation that seems more common now than I realized. I was asked if I had to lose one thing, sight or sound, which would it be? Rebecca never had the choice. Yet, she takes the most out of life she can and truly practices the concept of Carpe diem-Seize the day!Above all, Rebecca Alexander's book left me feeling more humble than I could imagine. But, it also left me with such a wonderful feeling of hope. It's a wonderful book to read and share. Of all the books I have read over this past year, Not Fade Away ranks at the top!

Great read, heartwarming and inspirational. Rebecca draws you into her life, her friends, her family and by the time you're done, you feel like you are part of her big, warm, supportive network. I was a little apprehensive starting the book, preparing to read about some very difficult challenges for this young vibrant woman, but instead, I walked away awed and inspired by how Rebecca turns thoughts of pity to admiration for how she has chosen to live life to it's fullest, choosing to celebrate everything she does have rather than what she has lost!

This autobiography is about a truly an unbelievable courageous young woman informing us from her first diagnosis of a genetic disease which will probably result in another Helen Keller! Even though she learns of her disease at a early age, she is going through life, as we speak, continuing to live as a "healthy' professional. I could not put the book down to learn of what was going to transpire next in her life.

Reading Rebecca Alexander's memoir is like listening to a good friend confide what it is like to gradually lose sight and hearing. As she goes through the progression of how her syndrome effects her body and her life, she lets you in on the ups and downs of her journey without pretense. Rebecca's voice is honest, courageous, funny and inspiring. I loved her descriptions of the many physical challenges she decides to take on and how she is able to harness enduring strength, even as other parts of her body are becoming weaker. A joy to read.

This little cookbook is a gem. Easy to read, with interesting and tasty recipes. I bought it for my 4 year old, but it would be best for an older child experimenting on his/her own or with some patient hovering. Can't wait until my little one reads so she can "act like a grown-up and cook".

great

Yes, it is a very good book for children and maybe even for my son who is now out on his own. Thank you. Sandra Herbert

Great book just what I was looking for

This is a wonderful cookbook that I am using to lead a weekly kindergarten cooking class. It has easy to understand pictures, so that the kids can "read" the recipes. The recipes are from around the world with at least 100 recipes. A detailed table of contents makes recipes easy to find.

This is a great book for teaching individual portion cooking and I have used it from preschool all the way through elementary grades as so few kids get to handle and mix foods at home. BUT, the price is WAY out of control. A 400% markup from the publisher price seems a bit over the top.

It's one of my favorite cookbooks to use with children. I just wish that it currently was still be published as I'd like to buy copies for friends, family and colleagues.

The life conditions in which Obertyn Jews had to live are described in the poem Molasa - Ghetto Sweets; she shows in a detailed way, the psychological and physical suffering caused by hunger. Once I started this book I couldn’t stop reading it. At times it was difficult to read. The fact that someone as young as Krystyna was when she went through all of these terrible events survived is a testament to her faith. Raised a Jew she was interested in her Catholic friends religion. She kept her knowledge secret. This and her mom’s statement that “God protects orphans”, helped carry her through this hardship. For those who want to read a clean cut memoir that takes them from point A to point B smoothly, you need to know that this doesn’t happen in this book. I believe that is why I enjoyed it. It reads like someone who is telling a story and remembers it in bits a pieces. The author has done an excellent job of putting things in chronological order. However, It is obvious that there are gaps in her memory. This makes it seem even more authentic. We remember things and then what we remember triggers another memory. However, we don’t want to interrupt our story so we throw that thought in and tell our audience we will discuss it in more detail later. So many people who have survived the Holocaust came out bitter. No life was not easy and was not fair to the author. However, she took the lessons learned and used them in a positive way to shape her life.We teach about the Holocaust in our eighth and ninth grade English Language Arts Classes. This is definitely a book I will put on my shelves at school. It is another voice added to so many. Yet this is told in a manner my students will definitely be able to understand. I highly recommend this book.

This is unlike any other memoir I have read before! A beyond heart-warming story of Krystyna Carmi a beautiful little girl who lost her family during the holocaust. Krystyna was the only child survivor from all the Jewish children of Oberty. She shares her courageous story of her life. Each page takes you on a journey as if you were there walking hand in hand with Krystyna. Seeing things through her eyes, smelling the scents she did. Feeling the pain and heartache that followed. The Struggle of what she went through to get where she is in life. Her journey was not an easy one at all!One thing that really makes this book even more captivating, is all the beautiful pictures! It really makes you not only connect to the Author but also to the other people in the book. By the time you reach the end of this beautiful book, you’ll want to re-read it all over again. The detail and writting style that Krystyna shares with her readers are amazing. It brings so much insight into what happened during World War II that we may not already know. This is definitely a MUST READ! But be warned, you’ll need some tissues!

It took me about 3 days to read the book. The first day I read primarily the part of Krystyna's life before the war. This part to me didn't grab my attention. There was nothing really interesting about it, however, I wanted to keep reading. Krystyna was writing about her life before the war, during the good times. She was describing her interactions with other children, and how she was treated in her own family. The second day I was reading about the war times, and I read as much as I could. I am glad I continued reading as this part is the most strident, vibrant part of the book. It is truly incredible what Krystyna survived through as a little girl. This part of the book was very emotional, and colorful, and made the events that transpired sound very realistic. I think Krystyna Carmi is successful at describing these events as she still remembers so much, and the colorful details of the descriptions throughout the book really make the story stand out and almost come to life. The third day of my reading was the part of the escape, and the long hiding in the woods, as well as all the events after the World War II was over.It is interesting for me to read the story because, really, Krystyna is almost the same age now as my aunt. I am very impressed with all the memories described in the book, all of the details, as well as the courage that Krystyna had to put it all down on paper.Overall, this is a great book mostly due to the events described and the memories that needed to be put on paper. This generation of war survivors is almost gone now, as in my family most of the elders are deceased and I wouldn't be able to hear their war stories any more. This is nice that Krystyna was able to share her experiences, and sadness with the world in this book.I was amazed with the number of photographs that were found and preserved from those times, and the photos really make the book that much more vivid and real.I studied history from the perspective of a Soviet child in the 80-90s, and it is always interesting for me to read what it was like from the point of view of a real person living in Poland during the war, and learn what it was like. There is never going to be a way to understand why this happened to so many people who suffered and were tortured during the Holocaust, or all of the other genocides done to all of other nations throughout time. These are disgraceful pages of history, and people will never be able to pay back for what was done. It is not possible to return the families lost, and to undo the tortures. It is important to read about it though, and to learn, and never let this happen again. I feel helpless reading about human racism. I hope that more people can read this book, and suffer through with Krystyna, and feel compassion to one another never to let genocides happen again.Sample was provided free of charge for reading and a review.

The author really details her childhood. This was nice. There is nothing worse about reading a memoir then to get the feeling that the author has only given the readers the bare bones of their story. Not that every, little detail needs to be provided. Yet, when I am reading a memoir I am wanting to feel like I got to know the author or the subject matter that the memoir is written on.In this book, I really did feel like I got an clear image of what life was like for Krystyna growing up. When she talked about her family, I felt like I wanted to be a part of her family. The pictures that are featured in this book are great. I like how the author placed them throughout the book; instead of all in the center of the book or at the end. Not that I really needed the images to tell the story as I got an instant image in my head reading the book. However, the images helped with the story. Due to the placement of them, they enhanced the story more. Not all great memories but you can't expect that when people are dying in the ghetto. You really appreciate life more when you read stories like Krystyna's. This book is easy reading. If you enjoy reading memoirs than you have to check this book out.
