About the Author

My lifelong relationship with nature and natural landscapes began in the forest, fields, mountains, streams and seashores of New England. When I was 12, my family moved to California, where we explored the High Sierra, the Pacific Coast, and everything in between. I traded Henry David Thoreau's Walden Pond for John Muir's Range of Light. On cross-country road trips I captured photos on a Kodak Instamatic camera, but a year-long photography class in 8th grade introduced me to exposure and composition, and I practiced developing and printing 35 mm film. I was inspired and moved by the work of Ansel Adams and Galen Rowell, who were shooting at that time the same mountains and valleys that I was exploring, hiking, fishing, camping, backpacking, and skiing in.  Upon graduating from the University of California, Berkeley, my first job was as an applications engineer for the Graphic Printing and Imaging Division at Tektronix, where I received a sound foundation in digital imaging. The arrival of affordable digital cameras promised to put the full end-to-end photographic process in the hands of any photographer with a computer, so I jumped in with both feet, eagerly adopting four new models from 2001 - 2006. My divorce in 2006 left me free to pursue photography full time. I won awards in photography contests, and licensed photos to National Geographic, Old Earth Almanac, Outdoor Photographer Magazine, and many others. I was invited to teach photography in 2009, and by 2012 my photography workshops covered several national parks, the Eastern Sierra, and night photography in the ghost town of Bodie State Historic Park. I have been living in the Eastern Sierra, not far from Bodie, since 2010. Having visited the park for decades now, I am honored to have raised over $25,000 for building stabilization in Bodie through my workshops there. We can't predict what will happen in our lives tomorrow, but we can look back and see all of the small influences and decisions that led us to where we are today. Happiness is when you wouldn't want to have arrived anywhere else. In recent years my path has often led me through and east of Ansel Adams' Yosemite, and through and north of Galen Rowell's Eastern Sierra, and that sure seems like paradise to me. What an awesome book! I pre-ordered this without hesitation, as the author is one of my favorite photographers (I discovered him on Flickr). This book is very detailed and contains all the necessary tips to get that perfect shot.I also own the Northern California book (it is not by the same author) and there is some overlap in the areas the books cover, but if you're into photographing California, get both books!My favorite chapters are the ones that focus on the Eastern Sierra/Yosemite, as these are my favorite spots to visit and photograph. I even discovered some spots I didn't know about in the area -- and I thought I knew all of them! Unfortunately, I do not live in California, so I can't put this book to use until my vacations next spring and summer, so this book will be used for some planning this winter!As much as I loathe taking books on airplanes (I use my kindle), THIS will be going in my backpack!My only criticism is that that photos should be bigger -- most, with the exception of the chapter headers, are thumbnail size, which doesn't do justice to the author's amazing photography.

Even though I'm a California native, this book was still a nice trove of useful information. I was already familiar with a few areas covered in the book before I got into photography; however, a lot of info here was new from a photography perspective. It's a pretty exhaustive book, there were many locations that I was unaware of that I now want to explore. Sullivan provides lots of photographic examples which was helpful, but one thing lacking were maps. I think a map prefacing each area he was about to cover would've been a valuable addition. But to me, this is a minor detraction. I know that I'll be repeatedly referring to this book for years to come. I plan on purchasing other books from this series.

Nice book with lots of nice pictures. I follow Jeff on Twitter and really enjoy his photography which I wish was larger within this book, but he gives tons of local insight on destinations within California. A must for anyone looking to visit California or seeking ideas on what to do in the state.

It is a very good book with a great deal of useful information about when and where to photograph the California landscapes. I understand why the focus on landscapes but California unlike the southwest deserts, has many places with large numbers of wildlife including seat otters, egret, Tule elk, brown and white pelicans, and I would expect that many people traveling around the state would want to get the full picture.The other shortcoming is the lack of maps which would have been helpful when covering a state like California with its more than 163,000 square miles and with a coastline that stretches for 840 miles. If you are intimate with the state then one can mentally work around this limitation but for travelers coming in from outside the state it will take more time to organize an itinerary based on the time available.An excellent and actually much better book to buy as well (though available only as a used copy) is the book Photo Secrets San Francisco and Northern California (which includes a substantial section on Yosemite). Another book or books will be helpful if you want to photograph the towns, architecture, or the wildlife of California.Be prepared to use this book as a starting point for planning a trip and then doing more detailed research of the places mentioned as this book comes up short for actual boots on the ground landscape photography.

Great book. I photograph in southern California a lot and this book will be very helpful. Tell about the photographic subject, how to get there and when the best light is. This book really delivers in a big way.

Since 2012 I have done a lot of independent studies/ readings on differences between men and women, so far my top book would have to be The Evolution of Desire, BUT Why Women Have Sex did bring a focused approach to the sexual yes and no's of the ladies. My female friends feel comfortable around me, but not enough to fully explain why they have sex. I think adding the quotes from women of the study really help to give the book some personal material. We all have met someone in these kinds of situations, and it gets easy to assume why they stay, or allow something to happen. One example that I would never have imagined was the young lady who was in a relationship and had sex with her husband/boyfriends friends or else he would kill her. It is crazy to think that is something that actually happened to someone! That is right up there with sex trafficking. Enough of my ramble, all in all, I really enjoyed the book, and will recommend it as I have The Evolution of Desire, and Sperm Wars.

This is one of the best books on sociology, evolutionary psychology, relationships and sexuality out there. I highly recommend it to everyone. It details so many case studies on why women have sex and goes very in depth into the evolutionary psychology, sociopolitics, and other aspects of female sexuality and related subjects. It provides a wealth of knowledge and is a super engaging book that is really fun and interesting to read and will keep wowing you every step of the way. Its hard to put down!

Documents how women use sex as a currency. Women need to be empowered so they can overcome the destructive effects their own sexuality imposes. Our culture and "evolutionary" influences regarding sexuality are so negative and divisive! The book starts with the proposition women like sex for the natural/biological benefits but mostly documents the dysfunction of it all. Was hoping as serious students of female sexuality the authors would emphasize the hamster cage dilemma created by prevailing sexual motivations.

This book has increased my awareness of women's sexuality and desires. The combination of anecdotes from surveyed women plus the evolutionary perspective plus the clinical lens delivers a read which is thoughtful, clear, humorous, and telling.

before I read this book, I had ideas about why women were attracted to men and how they decided to have sex with men. I knew some of my ideas were accurate(but not all) yet reading this book expanded and widened my "views"about their behaviors and decisionmaking........... d-r-a-m-a-t-i-c-a-l-l-y.

a fascinating look into the heart and soul of women as they consider one of the most basic, intimate, and essential of all human activities.

reading this was a very pleasant experience since it was easy to read and the insights were well documented and well presented. I am still reading and enjoying this text...and learning a lot more with each read. Highly recommend this to anyone male or female if one truly wants to have an easy insight into the psychology of women s sexuallity

I have read several books summarizing the evolutionary explanations for the when, why, and, to a lesser extent, the how of women's sexual preferences and trajectories. This book is similar in content to David Buss' works, so if you have read his stuff, you can skip this one. If not, it is a good, clear, informative, persuasive read.

It's been a long time since I've read a thriller. This girl needs her romance!!!I've forgotten how exciting it can be to get the brain going to what awaits within. THE SEARCH, as I read it, I kept thinking what actors could play these roles because this would make a great movie.Will keep you teetering on the edge. I read in one seating which considering I'm a romance junkie says to how well it was written to hold my interest. I received an ARC for an honest and voluntarily review.

This is a well written thriller that had me on the edge throughout. The author does a great job bringing strong characters and moving the story at a suspenseful pace. He fills it with drama,danger,intrigue and tons of action. He describes his scenes in vivid detail,making the story realistic. The emotions run high from start to finish. I loved this book and would highly recommend reading.I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book. All opinions in this review are my own and freely given.

This fast paced thriller will keep you on the edge of your seat. Mason is a retired Navy Seal who is raising his daughter after his wife's death. They live a quiet, reclusive life away from the horrors of his past career. Everything changes for Mason when his daughter is kidnapped and he is forced to revert to some old ways. No shortage of drama, danger or covert action. Well written with strong characters and an engaging story. I read an advance reader copy and voluntarily chose to review.

I have been reading romance novels for such a long time now that I forgot how much I enjoy a good thriller.This story will grab you from the start and hold your attention throughout.This book has it all and regardless of the genre you usually read you will enjoy this story.As the title says its book 1, I eagerly anticipate book two because sometimes you need you heart to beat quickly even when it's not a steamy scene.I was given this book for an honest voluntary review.

This is an extremely fast paced, action-y read.Mason is ex-military.Set in 2028, he's a widower, his wife Bree having passed away from her second bout with cancer.Now, he's a single, ever watchful of their teenage daughter, Clara.The action stats right off with Clara being Taken (yep, like the movie Taken) and he's sent directives.Thus begins his search for his daughter and just who took her.Recommend.I voluntarily reviewed this book.

This book is supposed to be a few years futuristic, not much,just a bit.The author seems to write in a grammatically correct but very rigid style which does not give his book some very needed realism. There were moments I thought the words had been penned by a female.Might I suggest the author start at the beginning of the book as a reader (not a writer), read the words and thoughts of the main character, then give his own review.

I can’t wait to see how they progress in future books.In this book, Gretchen is in trouble, and Josie refuses to believe she’s guilty. Even when Noah doubt’s Gretchen’s involvement in the murder of a young man, Josie’s faith in her friend never falters. But it’s more than faith, it’s instinct. This series is best read in order, I feel, as the main character has really grown and changed for the better. Josie is a strong willed, persistent, smart woman. The book is laid out in manner that has the reader jumping from the 1990’s to the present day, and its a little annoying as you don’t know the people being discussed and they change with every chapter. You soon realize a serial killer is at work, but I think it could have been spelled out in a less confusing way.Gretchen and Josie have a lot in common. Both are Detectives in Denton, Pennsylvania. Both have cray cray mothers who raised them, and both mothers are inmates in the same prison. Gretchen, however, has confessed to murder; Josie doesn’t believe her, and is determined to prove Gretchen is innocent. Wishful thinking? Josie and Noah, another Detective, are enamored 🥰 with each other, but don’t have time to do much about it!All in all, this is a complex storyline, with unforeseeable surprises and twists, which makes for a delightful read! I’ve really enjoyed this series.

I really enjoy reading all of Lisa Regan's books and very much enjoyed this book but with one minor complaint. I grew increasingly annoyed with the police chief who replaced Josie Quinn when she decided to step down as chief - her choice although the mayor never liked her and considered her to be an interim chief. I find it difficult to believe that police chiefs debase their staff as this one does. He yells at them and these are professionals - his method of communication is to bark orders and tells them to "get their asses into his office" or wherever he wants them. Josie was chief for two years and certainly deserves more respect than being treated like that. If this chief is in the next book I hope he lightens up and is more respectful. He did "soften" a bit towards the end but not much.

Detective Quinn is an intriguing protagonist throughout this series. As difficult as it is to make each book stand alone for new readers, those of us reading the series from the beginning really want to know more about her personal life, too. For those of you who haven't read this series from the beginning, I highly recommend starting it at the beginning so you can understand Josie and the characters around her. She's not just a one-dimensional crime-solver.

This book was everything you would expect from Lisa Regan and more! I pre-ordered this a month ago, and it dropped to my Kindle today - I literally read it cover to cover, only stopping once to feed the dog. It was great to learn Gretchen's back story in this thrilling new Josie Quinn book. I can't wait for more, and if you find time, I would definitely recommend checking out Regan's other titles! I love her style and the characters she writes about.

Regan's writing style and plots remind me of Kendra Elliot and Melinda Leigh a bit. I enjoy all three of these writers and Josie Quinn is one of my new favorite police detectives. When people use the terms "stay up all night" or "edge of my seat", this book is nothing short of that meaning. Josie and the supporting characters are vivid, true to life characters with personal and professional problems that we all live and deal with. If you are looking for a gripping mystery, this is one.

Although I’m a pretty tough critic of many authors in this genre and use 5 star ratings very sparingly, I’m a huge fan of this author and have read all of her novels. When I learn she’s about to release another novel, I immediately preorder it & begin the countdown to its publication date. That’s how confident I am that I will love her next book even more than the last, and that’s not a statement that I make lightly! If you haven’t taken the plunge into the world of Detective Josie Quinn, I strongly suggest you do so! I promise that you’ll be happy you did!

I've never read a voice like this--not because of the style, though. Yes, the writing is good and beautiful in parts, but if Hemingway really did say that Markham was a better writer than he, I disagree. For me, the complex long sentences tripped over their own feet at times, overextending metaphor where Hemingway's simplicity would have done better. No--it was the workings of Markham's mind, her philosophy and decision process, that I found truly incredible.Paula McClain's book Circling the Sun is a fictional memoir of Beryl Markham, and West with the Night is her actual memoir. I wondered at first why McClain would choose Markham of all people to fictionalize, when Markham had already spoken for herself in this memoir. I was almost irritated. After all, Markham is dead. She can't speak up and say, "that's not how it happened. Read the book I ALREADY WROTE if you want to know." Now that I've finished West with the Night, I understand why Mcclain wanted to write Circling the Sun.Markham writes about how she came to hunt with the Masai tribe as a child in Africa, and how she came to love and train horses (when there were no other women doing it), and how she came to fly planes (when hardly anyone, let alone women, was doing it), but she dwells not at all on her personal relationships or feelings, which for the curious reader should provide context and explanation of Markham's unusual talent and viewpoint.She writes more about the moody, wise, indifferent nature of Africa than she writes about her own feelings. We have no idea, for instance, what it felt like when her mother left Markham and her father to return to England when Markham was four years old. You don't even know from West with the Night that Markham's father practically forced her into marrying an older man at the age of 17 because her father was moving and didn't know what else to do with her. These events undoubtedly shaped Markham's courage and ambition, but West with the Night doesn't tell us how.West with the Night is the end result of some strange fomentation within the person of Markham. She writes without arrogance and with plenty of humor about all of her 'firsts.' To Markham, they were simply good ideas. She cared nothing for, or even seemed to think about at all, what other people thought of her. She moved in circles that other women never entered, and was treated as one of the boys. In making life decisions, like the decision to move to Britain, for instance, she was pointed solely by the needle of her own compass. She was happy flying and scouting game in Africa, but wondered what she might be missing. So she moved. Apparently, men followed her. I admit to my morbid curiosity on this point, and I may read Circling the Sun for McClain's take on the other parts of Markham's life.On the other hand, I may not read it. Markham's critics accuse her of not writing her own memoir (it's too good, they say, to be written by her), and of being a home-wrecker. Her critics look for opportunities to criticize her, for of course she is too unbelievable to escape jealousy. Our curiosity about Markham's personal life shares also this unbelieving desire to justify, to show how the rest of us may have gotten from Point A to Markham's Point Z if only we'd been born into similar circumstances. Really, all you need to know is that she did these things, in spite of fear, and did them well. She was luminous and rare. You can sit back and be inspired by her story without having to justify, explain, or otherwise take away from its magnificence by delving into a personal life she preferred to leave private.

West With the Night is a marvelous auto biography of Markham's time in Africa. She was raised on a farm by her father who bred race horses, and became quite an accomplished trainer and horsewoman herself. Since the road system was deplorable or non-existent in the 1930's, small planes delivered the mail and other essentials, and she trained to be a pilot. She conducted groups of hunters on safari, helping them to locate big game, especially elephants which were difficult to locate in the vast areas of Africa.Her crowning achievement was a solo flight from Europe to Newfoundland, 3600 miles, 2000 of it unbroken ocean, in a small plane with no radio and no electronic guidance systems. She had to let the engine die to ensure that she had completely consumed the fuel in a tank before switching to another tank and restarting the engine! It was an astonishing accomplishment for any pilot, and the first time for a woman to make such a solo flight. She writes with such intensity of the details of the 1936 flight that you feel like you're in the plane with her, gripped with the suspense and surrounded by the black night.Markham's writing is beautiful and at times poetic, especially when she describes the landscape and inhabitants of Africa. She lived in the wonderful era described so gorgeously in "Out of Africa", and even knew some of the people described in that book. She lived another 50 years after this magnificent feat, and I wish she had been convinced to continue writing.

Sheer poetry! I've never been to Africa, I've never flown a plane, I've never trained a race horse... Neither had Ms. Markham until one day, there she was, a British child--an only child--in the highlands of Kenya, her feet at the starting line of becoming the amazing woman she would become. To read this is similar to watching a time-lapse photographic record of an exotic flower bursting into bloom--all the more fascinating because the subject isn't a simple flower but a human being. By doing, one becomes!The story culminates in an epic, trans-Atlantic flight, but along the way it reads like a marvelous bed-time story--the kind that the Aesop's Fables author might have written if he had lived in Africa, observing human and animal nature in an era that feels farther removed from today than a mere century should seem.I enjoyed three things about this book: the beautiful language with which it is written, the observations of a world I will never see, and the affirmation that yes, it is possible to become all that one might be if only one takes that first step and then the next and the next.
