ANATOMY OF INNOCENCE highlights the stories of fifteen wrongfully convicted and imprisoned Americans, all exonerated by The Innocence Project, a non-profit legal group set up in myriad states, usually affiliated with a law school, with the goal of exonerating wrongfully convicted people. Originally, The Innocence Project focused on newly developed DNA evidence to reverse convictions, but have expanded their efforts and now include official misconduct, tortured confessions, and false witness identifications, among other things.ANATOMY OF INNOCENCE highlights a few of their successful cases. A mother convicted of a 'shaken baby syndrome' death based on underdeveloped scientific evidence (the same doctor that played a role in her conviction helped to reverse it); a seventeen year old convicted of rape and murder, even though another person's DNA was present on the body; people convicted based on confessions signed only after abuse and false promises of release; a prosecutor who had exculpatory evidence that was discovered only after his sudden and unexpected death. All of the cases were compelling examples of what can go wrong in the American Justice System, most of them preventable if those charged with the administration of justice followed the rules, laws, Constitutional rights, and ethics that supposed to be sacrosanct to our system of justice.Many of the cases highlighted did more than tell the stories of the tragedies that led to the false convictions and incarcerations. They shared the awful experiences of the prison systems, the daily lives of hundreds of thousands of Americans imprisoned in inadequate, antiquated, violent, and cruel prisons across the country that have absolutely no rehabilitative purpose, mistaking punishment for justice and, in the long run, likely cause more harm to society than good. In this regard, a few of the cases highlighted were more about the awful system than about the wrongful conviction and the hard work that led to its reversal; while compelling and worthy of a book or two on its own, I thought it deviated from the purpose of this book.

A previous writer had said the stories leave you hanging, they do not go into as much depth as one would like, I have to agree. Interesting stories, but more details would make it a better read. They breeze thru multiple years in prison like it was a 2 month stint, when it had to have been totally life altering. More detail would have been nice as to how they were exonerated also.

The organization of the book, from arrest to release, to life after wrongful imprisonment was a clever choice. I love the different voices of each exoneree told through each author. Heart wrenching facts that have changed the way I view our justice system.

It is hard to read sometimes. Not because its not written well but because it is so well written it gives you a front seat to the tremendously destructive so called Justice system and their carelessly, thoughtlessly destroying of people and their families. It is painful to read about what the exonerated have lived through, yet it isn't all about the misery it is about how they have overcome that torture and have a bright and hopeful outlook.

This book is a chilling reminder that our legal system is as flawed as we all are and its injustices are frightening. It is especially dangerous for those of us without the financial resources to effectively fight back. The stories here are all different in their telling and the same in their tales of suffering perseverance and compassion.

Anatomy of Innocence came in perfect condition and a little bit earlier than expected. Although I've just started it, I'm enjoying it so far. Would recommend to others.

Wonderful book!

Raised in a white protestant bigoted republican yankee family - whose ancestors arrived 12 yrs after the Mayflower - and can count on one hand presidents(party affiliation aside) i could truly admire - but thank God - along came the Obamas and my faith and respect has once again surfaced!! would that we could have that intelligence and compassion and honesty leading our country now in the midst of all this hate and untruths and ignorance - taking away from us the respect of the entire world as we once knew it!!

The top of pages through out the book were cut off, this includes peoples heads and the beginning of paragraphs, either they were cut before knowing it was upside down, not edited or for some other reason like didn't care. I would advise not to buy, maybe that's why the prices was reduced to $9.95 for U.S. customers.

The first few chapters give a very informative overview of the major segments of higher education: community colleges, comprehensive universities, and research universities. However, after that, things get less concrete. I felt that the sections on graduate education mainly dealt with issues and not a good overview of the institutions, and I felt his statements weren't grounded in fact--it was a lot of "it could" and "maybes". I also had issues with some of his characterizations, like the only use for a PhD is to teach, or that "pure research" means writing articles with lots of citations. Also, he doesn't tie everything together until the afterword, which, in my opinion, doesn't allow thorough treatment of the issues he brought up, and doesn't occur until I've waded through 20 chapters.In short, I find the section on undergraduate education well worth reading, but I think it loses value after that.

Derek Bok is a positivist writing to the postmodern world of higher education. He firmly believes that there is an objective truth about colleges and universities, and he is determined to martial every ounce of empirical evidence to prove this. His scientific beliefs are in a higher education that he imagines as beautiful and deserving of love. And his affections are not blind. He details every disfigurement.The book's strengths are in the sections on undergraduate education and professional education. The center of the story is the tension that is mounting around the need to improve the quality of undergraduate instruction. His evaluation of professional schools and how they balance the demands of the academy with the demands of the profession is masterful. (Plot spoiler alert.) Medical schools are given high marks and business schools are found lacking.The weakness of the book is the Steinbergian view West. His core audience is the Northeast, but yet when he speaks of the needs to improve quality (learning and instruction) and quantity (enrollment and graduation) in higher education, he gives the elite selective schools the principal's hall pass. His view seems to be that the real job of educating America will fall to comprehensive colleges that are in a distant land beyond the Charles. Other than a fanciful idea about "admissions lotteries" for selective schools, he makes no real attempt to call for collective action by the Eastern elites. This is unfortunate, because he might be one of the few voices that has the strength to do just that. (His best opportunity in the text is missed in his chapter on "Graduate Education.")At times, Bok sounds like he has entered the muddy trenches of Midwestern administration when he rails against NCAA athletics and unhelpful competition created by magazine college rankings. But his chief credential is that he was President of Harvard. Were these ever his daily concern? What seems clear is that he has attempted to expand his audience, while still writing for the Crimson Choir.The language at the end of the book is wistful and yearning. He counsels future academic administrators "to do what they can with carrots and sticks" (p.405). His real audience that he attempts to reach is the collegium of faculty across America. This is where he seems to have placed his faith and hope for the future of higher education. And this is probably as it should be...trying to reach the people that love education, and not just care about it.

I ordered this textbook for a Higher Education Administration course and I used this text as a reference constantly. Although I didn't agree with all of Dr. Bok's views but he is very knowledgeable about higher education.

This book was required for a course. It was interesting to read about the history of college education in America.

Kindle version is cheaper, but does not show page numbers, only locations. Purchase for class only if you have no hoping of citing quotes from this book!

Required reading for MA

Gift for someone else

Very much an academic polemic. Author tackles all of the variations of higher education, to such an extent, including the professional graduate programs, it can be overwhelming to absorb. What were the author's main criticisms? Has accessible higher education for the masses benefited both individuals and society too? No doubt the usual post-secondary baccalaureate degree is not the best fit for all adults. Ironically, as the land of second chances, sprinkled with the continental ideal of a universal education, the U.S. remains committed to this approach.

I enjoyed reading Matt's book on his experience of going through depression; it's part autobiography, part self-help manual - there is very much a sense of the author putting things back in place, mapping out the topography of his own mind and discovering a place where he can comfortably be himself. By putting it all down on paper, he is exorcising the demons in the darkness by exposing them to the light of public examination.As someone who has also been through the experience of depression for many years and has also arrived at incredibly similar conclusions after coming out the other side, I recognise completely the numb, bleak, monochromatic existence that he describes; the endless days ahead, the wasted days behind. The inability to realise that you have an impact on others, that you even matter. That anything matters.But it was this that made the 'depression years' in the book seem almost as turgid and endless as going through the experience again for real; by the 80th page, I really was feeling bleak; I started to recognise that familiar 'me me me' narrative that so bored me about myself when I was depressed and talking about it with friends, and reading the book itself almost became like a microcosm of battling with depression itself: were things really going to get better? Would I really start enjoying this book before it was too late? What was wrong with me for not feeling the same joyous giddiness that all the celebs on the covers evidenced in their soundbite quotes? Was I hateful for writing a less-than-glowing review of Matt's very personal and revealing book, risking hurting his feelings for my own subjective self-satisfaction?Even though this opening part of the book was bleak and uncomfortable to read, I accepted it for what it was and struggled through, adopting the maxim that sometimes, just keeping going is a victory for positivity. There were times when I came close to ending it all and closing the book for good, but - without checking the exact page count - I think the sun finally started to come out after 100 pages. That was too much for me as a depressive to get much out of - it was a hard read; it seemed to be there to function as a 'window into the nightmare' for those who haven't experienced it. They might find it useful, but although cases of depression seem to have similar themes and motifs, they vary in context as much as the sufferers themselves are unique individuals.After that, when the book deals with where his head's at now, it gets easier. But these are things I wanted more detail on - there are lots of lists, and very very short chapters all through this book, which make it easier to pick up and get into - but they also make the reading experience frustratingly insubstantial at times. Maybe there's something to this book leading the advance against the taboo of depression and suicide - if that's the case, then I hope it performs the function of getting it out into the public arena once and for all.There were times, when reading, that I felt that pang of wonder and dread that comes when you know exactly what the next sentence is going to be - and there are times when that same sensation of knowing felt like something jaded and predictable; similarly, there were times when I felt the tone of the narrative to be a gentle one, speaking great truths, but it also felt at later times like I was a bed-bound patient being ministered by someone with the bedside manner of Alan Titchmarsh; oozing soothingness and calm to a poor ill person.Life has brought me to the same conclusions as Matt, though; that's a sign we're both going the right way.A very thought-provoking read that isn't the magical work of profundity that the publishers seem to want to market it as - that's far too much expectation to have for what is essentially a very humble enterprise; that of an author working through what happened to him in the most natural way possible for him - via his pen. It is a work of kindness, and of good intention; it is a work of reason, and a testament to the powers of the mind; but I feel that it's being hyped into something that the author never intended it to be.This book is useful for those who wish to get an idea of what it feels like to go through depression. It would also be useful to someone in the middle of a depressive episode, I suppose. Personally I was both pleased and disappointed by this book - pleased that we had arrived at almost exactly the same perspective on life, but disappointed that I could therefore only confirm my existing beliefs rather than challenge them and learn something new.Finally, my views on happiness, how to find it, and how to keep it (as Matt finishes in the same way himself):1) All that exists is the moment of 'now'. Everything else - the past and the future - is in your head. Leave the past behind you; it has gone. By being positive in the present moment, you are sowing seeds of good possibilities for the future; there is no need to dwell modbidly on what is yet to happen.2) Being kind to others, and having your actions affect others in a positive way will make all parties a lot happier.3) Diversity of choice produces stress, not happiness. Keep it simple.4) Don't let your mind tell you downers. When you catch yourself having miserable thoughts, take positive action be reinforcing the upbeat, truthful alternative - even if you don't feel like you are.5) Your mind can be trained like a dog. A repeated action becomes a habit after three weeks or so. Acquire positive habits, drop the negative ones.6) Don't judge. It's not as simple as 'succeed' or 'fail'. Just accept and be open to what is.7) Exercise makes the body happy8) EVERYTHING IS GOING TO BE ALRIGHT.9) Your good mood deserves protection - it is fragile and valuable. Your good mood is stronger than the bad mood of others.10) You can always do better tomorrow.11) People feel happier if they have a purpose.12) Everyone's life is different. Everyone comes to terms with their life in their own way.Ultimately I'm a bit disappointed by this book, but I totally recognise the story; I liked it without getting as excited as everyone else seems to be doing.

Beautiful, brilliant, engaging and honest; I can highly recommend this book.However, Haig writes more about anxiety and panic attacks than it is about depression, per se. Haig has a complex of symptoms, clearly, that fall into a variety of categories and I commend him for writing openly about his personal experiences. But for someone who is dealing with more of a melancholia or pure depression (whether clinical or not), I would suggest reading "Darkness Before Dawn," editor Tami Simon.That said, there are many uplifting bits that I resonated with (I align within a stronger depressive spectrum than Haig does, or at least from what he wrote) like, for instance, his chapter titled "In praise of thin skins" -- extraordinary piece. And, as it happens, most of what he lists in "How to live (forty pieces of advice...)" are what I have found to be true as well during my own lifelong journey with melancholia, but especially since a suicidal attempt in my mid-twenties more than 30 years ago. His "reasons to stay" list didn't affect me very much because I've found "how to live" habits to provide more resilience and impetus, overall, and through the long haul, than "reasons to stay."

From the very moment I heard about it, I needed it.I read this entire book in roughly 4.5 hours. I devoured it. I also cried more than I have probably EVER cried while reading a book. But I also smiled. Maybe not a lot, but it happened. The synopsis says “It’s also an upbeat, joyous and very funny exploration of how to live better, love better, read better and feel more.” I was pleased to find that to be very true. I felt a lot reading this book. I like that Matt mentioned that not everyone’s depression is the same, that you can be both happy and sad at the same time (“just as you can be a sober alcoholic”), and how most people will not be able to see it:"To other people, it sometimes seems like nothing at all. You are walking around with your head on fire and no one can see the flames."My heart pounded so HARD in my chest practically the entire time I was reading, just as it is beating hard just writing this all down.Matt said at one point he hoped someone else would read his words and that maybe the pain he felt wasn’t for nothing. I know it wasn’t for nothing, but THANK YOU, Matt, for writing this book, for being brave and open and honest, for showing me I wasn’t alone no matter what the depression told me, for telling me that life will wait for me, for The Humans, for all of your words, for being alive.Let’s get down to the bottom line, shall we? Read this book. Read this book because you have emotions and hopes and feelings. Read this book because you are human and because you are alive. Read this book to live.
