There are a total of 101 pages in this book, but only 21 of the pages I found to have useful content, such as puzzles, games, cultural facts about Puerto Rico, etc. 30 pages comprised of diary pages where you fill in the date, the weather, a journal entry, and draw a picture. There are another 10 pages for reflection and coloring upon arriving home. The other 60 pages are checklists or lists of some sort, a packing list, a list of people you want to send post card to, size conversions, (which don't apply to Puerto Rico), puzzles/games, and the answer keys. Just buy a blank diary and find a good travel with children website.

Excellent travel journal for kids. Has about 14 days and each day asks what the date is, weather, gives space to write about your day, asks what the funniest thing that happened, the best food of the day, and what they liked best about the day. They also leave a page to add a drawing or picture for each day. There are games for the flight and down time too.

I have lived in the Dominican Republic for 22 years. This book has some good information about the country, but it also has MANY blank "journal" pages. My suggestion as someone who lives in the DR: Look up info on the country online and review it as a family. Then, just buy your child a journal notebook. The book is overpriced for the content (lack of).

Visiting Scotland as a family and my son will be using this as his journal for the trip for his home school work

I'll be heading to Alaska in 2017 for 3 weeks. Wanted something compact to record my thoughts about my trip. This will be perfect! Also has puzzles (with the answers in the back), that will be too simple for me, but I can work them with my grandkids. The journal part of the book is laid out in a 2-page spread...on the left there is room for the date, a small space to describe the weather and several lines to fill in with "What we did today". There are 3 lines at the bottom of the page with "Cool food of the day", "What I liked best today" and "Funny thing of the day." The right page has the title "Draw something you saw today" with a large frame underneath. At the bottom of the right page it says, "My picture is of:" That last thing will be good for me since I can't draw to save my soul and most things I do draw don't look much like what they are supposed to be.There's a list of websites you can use to research more about Alaska and pages to list what you'd like to see or places you'd like to visit. There are also 2 pages devoted to listing the names and addresses of people you'd like to send post cards too.The small size (7.5" wide x 9.25" tall and about 1/4" thick) will make it easy to slip into my backpack.

These were a gift for visiting children. They loved the journals! Both children explored with excitement to find the perfect subject for the day's journal entries.

Well received by grandchildren. They'll keep records of their many travels.

Extremely sleek and well made... and no magnetic locking mechanisms, making my hotel key card stay the way it is... excellent product... highly recommended

"John Carver is a revolutionary of the very best kind. Carver's Policy Governance model has provided the means for trustees to live out Greenleaf's challenge to boards to act as both servant and leader." --Larry C. Spears, CEO, The Greenleaf Center for Servant-Leadership; editor, Reflections on Leadership, Insights on Leadership, Servant Leadership, The Power of Servant Leadership; co-editor, Practicing Servant Leadership and Focus on Leadership "It took an inspired social scientist to record and describe the fundamental principles of [the Policy Governance] model, which provides deep insight into the role of the Board in the modern corporation." --Jeremy Booker, vice president corporate governance, British Petroleum, London "Dr. Carver’s governance model has been the key in empowering the State Bar of California Board of Governors to focus on policy that would help our judicial system." --Andrew J. Guilford, 1999-2000 president, State Bar of California "An indispensable guidebook to leadership excellence." --George Weber, executive director, Canadian Dental Association, Ottawa; former secretary general, International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, Geneva "Boards That Make a Difference explicates the model, which is simple, powerful and, above all, successful." —W. From the Inside Flap

In this revised and updated third edition, Carver continues to debunk the entrenched beliefs and habits that hobble boards and to replace them with his innovative approach to effective governance. This proven model offers an empowering and fundamental redesign of the board role and emphasizes values, vision, empowerment of both the board and staff, and strategic ability to lead leaders. Policy Governance gives board members and staff a new approach to board job design, board-staff relationships, the role of the chief executive, performance monitoring, and virtually every aspect of the board-management relationship. This latest edition has been updated and expanded to include explanatory diagrams that have been used by thousands of Carver's seminar participants. It also contains illustrative examples of Policy Governance model policies that have been created by real-world organizations. In addition, this third edition of Boards That Make a Difference includes a new chapter on model criticisms and the challenges of governance research. Boards That Make a Difference can help your board empower both board and staff, eliminate trivia, establish a meaningful organizational direction, clarify roles, plan productive meetings, establish officers and committees that work, and provide the leadership for which governing boards exist.

If you want to spark some healthy conflict in your next conversation with nonprofit CEOs or senior pastors, throw this verbal grenade into the discussion: "Hey! What do you all think about policy governance?"According to Policy Governance Guru John Carver, "Governing by policy means governing out of policy in the sense that no board activity takes place without reference to policies. Most resolutions in board meetings will be motions to amend the policy structure in some way. Consequently, policy development is not an occasional board chore but its chief occupation."I mention this because I consult frequently with nonprofit boards--and conduct governance webinars and workshops in North America and overseas. And even though the majority of boards I work with say they function as "policy governance" boards, I don't believe them--because their micro-managing practices are so blatant. For example, consider John Carver's insight on what he calls the flaws of "The Approval Syndrome." They include: reactivity, sheer volume of material, mental misdirection, letting staff off the hook, unfairly putting staff on the hook, short-term bias, lack of clarity in the board's contribution, and fragmentation ("a sequence of disconnected and unmanageably voluminous vertical slices of the whole...instead of a holistic, manageable fabric of horizontally connected policies").He adds, "We all profess that boards should deal with the big picture, but it is difficult to picture the forest by inspecting one tree at a time."One of my favorite Carver counter-intuitive commentaries describes what happens when a board delivers a "vote of confidence" for the CEO during a crisis situation. In this excellent policy governance bible, he writes, "Curiously, there are times when the board goes through the approval process not intending to withhold authority from the CEO but to confirm it. A board might declare its supports for the CEO by cloaking some controversial executive decision with the prestige of the boardroom. Board motivation is usually expressed thus: `We want the staff (or others) to know the board is really behind the CEO on this.' As long as the board and CEO understand that the decision is truly the CEO's, this approval not only seems harmless but appears to be a healthy show of solidarity."Then Carver adds this zinger. "However, such a gesture of board support is called for only if the board has been sending weak signals about the nature of delegation. This kind of support is rarely warranted if the board has made it clear to all that all CEO decisions that are within board-stated bounds are always supported by the board. Official support of a specific action implies that such sporadic backup is necessary, or conversely, that the general philosophy of delegation is weak."Carver notes--in his massive 340-page hardback, with another 80 pages of resources and references--that "Board approvals are an unnecessary and dysfunctional method of board control, then, regardless of the ubiquity of the practice." He goes on--in succeeding chapters--to build the case for "a more proactive, fair, and detrivializing approach to fulfilling the board's moral and legal obligation to control the organization."If no one on the senior team or board of your nonprofit organization or church is familiar with Carver's brand of policy governance (he invented the term), this is the starting point. Whether you agree or disagree that this board approach is right for your organization, it's important to understand the continuum of choices available--and to seek consensus on defining your current reality and where your preferred governance future lies. Interestingly, the book includes an excellent "ends" policy (a big Carver term) from Lancaster County Bible Church.Note: If 340 pages are a tad too much for you, Carver has a series of booklets, focusing on niche policy governance issues. Another option is to check out the "lean and mean" approach, favored by many including myself, of a 10- to 15-page Board Policies Manual, as described in the book, Good Governance for Nonprofits: Developing Principles and Policies for an Effective Board, by Frederic L. Laughlin and Robert C. Andringa.

Carver outlines an ambitious model for board work and behavior that is radically different than current practices in most membership organizations. If, after introducing this model in my own organization, it proves workable, I would give it 5 stars. The author's presentation of the model is somewhat off-putting, as he is supremely confident that this is the *only* legitimate/appropriate way to function as a board of directors, but his logic seems solid. Again, only time will tell for me whether Carver's words are backed up by actual improvement in my organization's BOD function.

I liked the concept theory and examples. The writing was a bit repetitive but informative. I will try to incorporate this type of Board of Directors into my newly established nonprofit. I agree with the author that it will not be easy since traditional boards do not operate in this manner. Bottom line the concept is critical to 21st century thinking, where organizations can impact the world at large beyond the organization's internal structure.

I sit on a national non-profit board and we recently used this book to guide us through a complete rewrite of our policies. It was such a different approach than how we had been operating - and allowed us the opportunity to see the "big picture" that we had been missing. Our organization has been getting bogged down by interactions between staff and board that grew more and more complicated, making everyone less effective. Carver's structure for policy governance allowed us to clearly define roles while addressing any board concerns. In the end, what we established was a system that now allows the board to use our time together to dream big for the organization we all love.

This book reads as though Mr. Carver wrote it just to impress someone (perhaps he likes to hear himself "talk" and use unnecessarily fussy words). He is clearly knowledgeable, but this proves to be one of the most disappointing texts in my PhD program. There must be a better, more palatable way to get this information.

A comprehensive plan for excellent board behavior that results in clarity for board members, the CEO, and the staff. Board behavior becomes more efficient and less erratic. Turnover decreases and board service becomes more fulfilling. Focus is achieved regarding the good that will be done in the world because the organization exists. Ultimately, the organization is positioned to make a difference.

Book of theory with few if any practical applications. A real sleeper, especially for insomniacs. No disrespect to author, but the concepts need to be written in ways that inspire members of volunteer nonprofit Boards to take positive action. I would like to say that the book was sent from Idaho Youth Ranch, and they were EXCELLENT, book arrived quickly, in perfect, undamaged, condition, like new! Idaho Youth Ranch provided outstanding service. My criticism is of the actual content of the book and how it was treated: far more theory and academic, than practical applications which I wanted. Online summaries are far less tedious.

A great resource......a bit dry.But aren't all books like this?

I will openly admit I approached this book with a lot of scoffing and derision. The author of Twilight...writing a THRILLER? I mocked. A lot. So before I say anything else I can absolutely tell you the book changed my mind I expected to hate it. I have long been a critic of Meyer's loose writing and weak heroines, so when the "tight thriller" statements started coming out I did laugh, but...that has turned out to be an accurate description of this book, and I absolutely would recommend it to anyone. Read it!!! DON'T MISS THIS BOOK. And for that reason, I would like to start with the things I was impressed with, which was a lot.A) Meyer's writing in this book is of much higher quality than her other books. Significantly so. I really do detest 'filler' in books. Thoughts that don't matter, descriptions that are irrelevant, musings that bore me to tears... The writing really is amazingly tight in this book as compared to her other books.B) It's a real thriller, not a romance with a bit of "fake" mystery to make it seem real, which again, was a surprise to me. I thought for sure it would be one of those pathetic romances with a prop for a plot. Well, not so at all in this case. The plot, with its plentiful twists and turns, is definitely the focus of the story, and it is a well planned, gripping plot at that. It was fantastically done.C) The heroine is strong, brilliant, and capable, and my opinion as an avid feminist is that she rocks. I love her!!! I absolutely love her. I love that she isn't weak, and survives on her own, and doesn't need anyone... I love that her life on the run has been lonely, but she has remained strong and outwitted operatives who are far better trained. I love that she was capable of saving her own life when it came right down to the line. I also love the fact that, as mentioned, she is brilliant. Not just top in her field, but doing work nobody else could even keep up with. And then there is the part where she remains calm in tense situations, thinks clearly, acts with purpose... Yeah, I really do absolutely love her.D) I very much appreciated the fact that Meyer didn't stoop to the use of slang, 'code' words used in dialogue, and over exaggerations of "special ops lingo" in an attempt at authenticity. I was military for 13 years...just an airplane mechanic...not something super secret or cool. But I have 0 respect for authors who try to make their books seem extra bad-a by using excessive, and grossly overdone language and terminology. This book stood on its own, and didn't need such props, and really benefited greatly from not having them. Very well done.E) And finally, the love interest. I was conflicted at first, but decided I was very pleased with the way things turned out. To be honest, I get sick of the constant grind of alpha male, helpless heroine routine, and I ultimately decided this romance made me happy, mostly because it was real.So those are the things that have most impressed me so far. Now, for the couple of things I struggled with personally as a reader. One wasn't a super big deal, but the other (though I lumped it in with the "nitpick") was noticeable enough to me at the start of the book that I almost didn't keep reading. So as for the two things I struggled with:A) The POV is third person, which I like infinitely better than first, but the book starts out with a narrator telling the story from a distance, and though that went away, the distance did not. Not for a long time for me. I couldn't connect with with the heroine. I didn't dislike her for the first 8 chapters, but nor did I like her. To be clear, this was not insignificant for me. At one point around chapter 5 I felt so disconnected I started checking to see how many pages were left in the book like a nervous tic, because I didn't know if I could keep reading for THAT many. It went away, absolutely, and I generally loved the book otherwise. But the extent of my struggle is the specific reason why I knocked off a star.B) It's a small complaint, but the name thing drove me nuts. The heroine, in the first chapters of the book, not only used different names when she talked to other people, she actually THOUGHT of herself in terms of those names. She WAS Casey, and then she WAS Alex, and then she WAS Jesse... Normally when using fake names, the character will still think of themselves in terms of their own names, but that wasn't the case here, and combined with the distance in the POV at the start, it did add to my overall struggle to really become engaged in the character and plot. That went away too, of course, but again, anything that almost causes me to put a book down, I mention. So my overall thoughts on this book are surprise and pleasure. I had no intention of loving it so much. I have NOT been a Meyer fan for a lot of years, and to be completely honest, I only bought this book so I could read it and then mock it. That was the plan. I even told the plan to my sister (also not a Meyer fan) and we laughed about it together. And then I read the book...and it was overall fantastic. Don't miss the read, and if you struggle with the distance like I did in the beginning, don't give it up. Keep reading. I really don't think you will be sorry...and though nobody knows me, that is about the highest recommendation I can give considering the author, and my previous opinions of her work. I didn't think in a million years she would change my mind. But she did!!!

Former government interrogator Alex has gone by many names in the 3 years she's been surviving on the run by dint of chemical know-how, obsessive planning, paranoia, and solitude; a trap laid by her former employers takes her life on a very unexpected turn, and she's suddenly part of a group of secretive survivors that includes dogs, an ex-CIA agent, a high-end escort, and the man who just might be the love of her life--if she can figure out what it actually means to be in love.(Though reviews are inherently subjective, I prefer to provide some organization to my opinions through the use of a personal rubric. The following notes may contain spoilers.)Plot and Setting: 4.9 -- Plot is engaging from start to finish. Has many unique elements, no major holes, and a sense of focus. Setting is clear and believable. Timeline is consistent, though a bit hard to follow. This is an action-packed, tension-driven story, with humor and romance and genius dogs thrown in to balance out the darker aspects. Incredibly detailed plots and plans, involving tons of clever spy tricks and deadly science, as well as a strong emotional story arc. A little of everything, sewn beautifully together. I loved it. I also appreciated Alex's inner commentary on how it seemed like more time had passed than actually had, because that's definitely the truth. I would've liked a little more clarity on the time passing front, but it does seem to be decently consistent throughout.Characters: 5 -- Relatable, realistic, interesting, dynamic characters. Even minor characters have depth, as do the relationships between characters. Lots of very unique, fascinating characters. Even the dogs have great personalities, and the close look Alex takes into the lives of the 'bad guys' she targets lends depth and realism to those characters, too. It was fun seeing the main characters grow and change over the course of the very few weeks the book covers, as Alex adjusts to caring about and trusting other people, Daniel deals with a reality so very foreign to all he's known before, Val shows her softer side, and Kevin changes his opinion about Alex. As strange as their situations are, these characters seem very real and believable in all they do.Mechanics and Writing: 5 -- Few, if any, typos, punctuation issues, or word errors. Intelligent use of POV. Skillful writing that adds to the story. Actually no typos, and great writing. POV is all 3rd-person Alex (or Juliana, Casey, Jesse, Charlie, Ellis, etc, etc, etc). I loved how her name kept changing in the narration to match her changing aliases, especially in the beginning. It wasn't as confusing as it sounds like it should have been. I only had to stop and think about who it was talking about once or twice (Jesse and Juliana threw me a bit, for some reason, but the other names all somehow felt like her).Redeeming Value: 3.5 -- Incidental uplifting themes or lessons. Drugs, alcohol, violence, etc, are a significant element of the story. No explicit sex scenes. Vague moral guidelines for behavior. Torture, poisoning, and black-ops violence is definitely a big feature here, though our band of heroes is placed on the lighter gray end of that dark spectrum: they limit their killing, etc, to soldiers, agents, and the big bosses who essentially put the hits out on them. Sort of a "just war" idea. One of the bosses, while dying, compliments Alex on not hurting the innocent, saying she has not lost her soul. So while it's not nearly as dark as it could be, we definitely have morally shaky ground there. Not to mention some (implied/off-screen) unmarried sex.Personal Enjoyment: 5 -- I loved it. It made me feel in all the best ways, and leaves me content and satisfied. One I'll definitely read again.

I love the character development. The story pulled me and I cared what happened to the Characters. lots of action and plot twists. First original spy novel I have read in awhile.

I slogged through the beginning. In fact, I was really surprised to find afterwards that it was only the first 15% that was difficult, as I put the book down several times by this point. Then we hit Chapter Five, and it starts getting interesting.Ranking with Stephenie Meyer's other works? I LOVED the heroine in The Host. I was completely enthralled with the story arc in the Twilight quadrilogy, forgiving all the teenage angst throughout with the reward in the last half of Book 4. And this one was all about the action. Fairly typical plot for a spy thriller, but the pacing IS a little different, so the author still managed some surprises, at least WHEN something happened. And I did become engaged with the characters, invested in their success. If you've previously crossed this author off your TBR list because you're not a fan of paranormal or science fiction books, you might reconsider for this action thriller. I will re-read in the future, which says it all.

A fast paced thriller that kept me reading late to finish. A different type of heroine with special skills. Loved the dogs too.

I am a 68 year old grandma. I have read all of Stephenie Meyer's books. Every one has been a great read. The Chemist was terrific. I finished the book in two days. If I had not required sleep I would not have put it down. The excitement, action and character development were first class. This is not a teen book. Strictly adult and adult action. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

I found this book online some time ago, but it was only available in scanned or other poor quality variants. It's a very engaging and even humorous read through the eyes of a WW1 British veteran who travels across America in 1919 by motorcycle when our country's modern-day infrastructure was in its infancy. How Shepherd handled adversity and perceived our country's road system of that day as he traversed the entire country on a motorcycle is a great read.I saw this book available in Kindle for my iPad and noticed the author had completely cleaned up scanning and other quality issues, so I purchased it. It is precisely as the author promises, a fully clean edition that looks and behaves just like a modern e-book. It was so nice to be able to read from a clean high-quality copy, so much so, that when reading it again I felt even more immersed in the story. After seeing this reworked quality, I also purchased a paperback version from the same author for my bookshelf. The paperback is completely reworked too and of modern typeset quality.Highly recommend.

This book is a great read on its own, but the Audiobook version creates a whole new dimension of enjoyment! The authentic British speaker takes you 100 years back in time when America was still a young country and some of the states that Shepherd traveled through were not even 10 years in existence as states, the "highways" were 95% dirt.

It’s a delightful adventure for us even as it’s a bewildering one for twelve-year old Morrigan when she takes a train to the mystical Wunderground and begins classes with eight others, all of whom have unique magical skills…except her. She’s been identified as a Wundersmith, but, what does that mean exactly? The only other person with that label is definitely not a nice person and he’s frightened many people with his abuse of his powers. Morrigan is worried; will she discover if she has any magic like her new classmates? Will others despise her when they find out what she is? Can she make friends? With strong echoes of Harry Potter and Hogwarts, we read about eccentric and difficult teachers, the challenges to learning magical arts, secrets that must be kept, and unexpected tests to see if Morrigan’s group can support each other. And Morrigan, who’s known her weaknesses all too well, starts to see she has strengths, too. This story contains many unexpected twists but has a satisfying ending. The author puts us into the action immediately, but there are many unusual names and references to people and events so that I wondered if I should have read the first of the series before this. (The first was a bestseller, FYI, and I suspect this will be too. And it would make a great movie, too.)

Fabulous sequel is fabulous. Two weeks after reading this, I'm still scraping my jaw off the floor. As with the first book, I loved the characters, the world, and the creativity. Ezra Squall is a very intriguing villain. I haven't seen one quite like him in a long time, and I'm looking forward to the increasingly hinted at plot of the overall series.

I love being back in this world. Nevermoor was honestly the best middle grade fantasy book since Harry Potter. There were a few things that I wanted/expected more in this sequel such as more interactions between Morrigan and Jupiter, more school and hotel scenes, etc. I feel like would have bumped it up to 5 stars for me but this was still a fantastic sequel. On that note, some of the interactions between Jupiter and Morrigan were just so beautiful and touching. They totally remind me of Sirius and Harry’s relationship. Okay, okay, no more comparisons with Harry Potter because this series is completely different but it just seems to bring up all this nostalgic feelings in me.I loved being introduced to new characters, especially the professors and instructors at the school. Such unique characters. Townsend really creates such a whimsical atmosphere to this world with her characters.I cannot wait until the next one! Also, if anyone listened to the audiobook, were you laughing at Morrigan’s singing? Because OMG. This narrator is hilarious.

I loved NEVERMOOR so much I ordered a copy from England so I could also have it in paperback while I waited impatiently for WUNDERSMITH to come out. And then as I read WUNDERSMITH, I was so enchanted and intrigued that I didn’t want it to ever end. Sadly, it ended and it’ll probably be a long time for a 3rd book. Jessica Townsend is a clever, talented and a skillful wordsmith. She managed to create loveable, unique characters, balancing rising conflict with heartfelt, fun moments. I’m waiting for the world to explode with “wunder” for this amazing series. I am recommending it to EVERYONE!!

I am loving the Morrigan Crow series! It's such a superb blend of wonder and humor and danger, and Townsend's writing carries you along at the perfect pace. I could NOT be happier to have had this series put in my hands, and you can bet I'm putting it in as many other hands as I can.I hope there's plenty more to come!

I devored "Wundersmith" the day it arrived last week. In my view it's a delightful mix of YA, urban fantasy and alternate history. It got a heavy touch of Roald Dahl-like wonderful way of describing the strange people and creatures Morrigan meets on her way.I'd recommended the books about Morrigan to both youth and adults alike. I'm allready waiting for the next one!

The Wundersmith is the second book of the Nevermoor series. Much like the first one it did not disappoint - the writing is eloquent and the story is good. My 11 years old daughter likes it and looks forward reading from the book every day.

This is the wonderful sequel to Nevermoor. Whenever I put it down, I couldn't wait to get back to it. It is only a children's book in the sense that Harry Potter is. Can't wait for the next book in the series -- and I am 71 years old!

Review

“At times poignant, bitter, and funny, this narrative captures [a] unique voice that questions what it means to die-and to live.” (Booklist (starred review))“My Heart and Other Black Holes is alive with intensity, gut-wrenching honesty, moments of humor, and-of course-heart. This is an extraordinary debut by a striking new voice in YA fiction that left me in awe and moved beyond measure. Not to be missed.” (Nova Ren Suma, author of IMAGINARY GIRLS and 17 & GONE)“With high intelligence and a massiveness of heart, Warga gifts us with a novel that has the music of Mozart, the logic of advanced physics, and the vision to see the link between them. This is something utterly new, a book that is kinetic and beautiful and unexpectedly life-affirming.” (Chris Lynch, National Book Award Finalist for Inexcusable and Michael L. Printz Honor-winner for Freewill)“[The book] addresses serious issues with complexity and humor . . . thoughtfully presented.” (School Library Journal)“Earnest and heartfelt . . . any teen who’s ever felt like an outsider will be able to relate to Aysel’s and Roman’s fully realized characters.” (Kirkus Reviews)“Debut novelist Warga addresses adolescent depression and suicide with honesty and grace” (Publishers Weekly)“Debut author Warga unflinchingly tackles the grim subject matter with empathy, sensitivity, and honesty, without trivializing her protagonists’ disturbing thoughts or emotions . . . [with an] utterly endearing romance.” (The Horn Book)“Warga delves honestly into the very difficult issues of teenage depression…sometimes sad, sometimes funny, but ultimately filled with hope.” (Voice of Youth Advocates (VOYA))

Do not read this book in a public place.Because it will make you cry. It hit me in the details, in places where I least expected it.Many books have been written about depression. And where some books failed, My Heart and Other Black Holes didn’t. It didn’t come off as dramatic. It wrote depression for what it really is and the harsh reality that comes with it.“Anyone who has actually been that sad can tell you that there's nothing beautiful or literary or mysterious about depression.”I have friends who suffer from depression and I worry about them. I know I can never imagine half of what they’re going through but this book gave me a peek at what’s inside. This is a story about two people who want to die. And is it wrong to say that I understand why they do? Life can sometimes be cruel and there’s nothing we can do to stop it. It hurts to know someone is suffering and no matter how much you want to make things better for them, you can’t.What I loved most about this book are Aysel and Roman. Sure, they are not the most like-able characters but they were written in such a way that you will accept them for who they are. No pretensions, just their real selves and it isn’t always pretty. And that’s okay. This is not a love story. There is no romance here, only love and hope. This is about finding people who understand you and accepts you as you are. This is about fighting even when you no longer want to. This is about finding reasons to live. And I hope you do. I hope every single day, you do.

A relatable quick read that skips around and tastes like Whoppers. This a 3 that should be a 2.5, but I'm too much of a wimp to do that. Before I even started this book, I was slightly rooting for them to... die. Or, mostly Ronan. I'm not morbid, I just didn't want them both to necessarily survive.I also believe that something is wrong when all you can do is imagine the leading main character with an 8-year-olds voice. The story seemed to skip around, and lost the central voice of the story, the main reason Ayzel wanted to commit suicide. The two main characters relationship also sped up very quickly. It went from a 4 to a 9.This story was like wanting a Snickers but you could only get some Whoppers (the chocolate malt bakey things). If you're easily pacified with quick read (2 hours, tops) then knock yourself out with this book. The main reason my rating isn't a 2 is because I found it quite realistic. Being around the same age group, I was able to relate to multiple characters. And there you have it. Thanks for reading.

Kudos to Jasmine Warga for being able to capture the authenticity and essence of a depressed/suicidal 16 year old girl, meeting a depressed/suicidal 17 year old boy and falling in love. I haven't been 16 for quite some time (I am 29) but reading this novel made me recall some of those utterly painful, confusing, intense, coming of age feelings. How powerful love used to be, and is. How powerful sadness can be, and is. It was excellent writing and a great story. I thoroughly enjoyed being a reader who was witnessing first love when the characters were unaware of it, and how heartbreaking it felt when gloom and external/internal conflict were challenging the new relationship. My Heart and Other Black Holes is thought-provoking, has memorable characters and a ton of really awesome quotes that you will be highlighting/sharing with others/repeating to yourself for weeks after reading. It's difficult to praise the details of the book without giving too much away because the ending really should not be known until you discover it yourself. The subject matter is difficult and even though this book is marketed towards Young Adults, I am not sure I would encourage every young adult to read it. Suicide can not be glamorized or made to be anything less serious than it is. While the author accurately portrayed depression and suicidal thoughts, I feel like a young adult reader COULD (if already dealing with depression and suicidal thoughts) romanticize suicide and depression. Instead of deterring the reader or encouraging them to seek help and guidance, it COULD influence them to glorify their depression/suicidal thoughts. It is so easy to be influenced as a young adult reader. With that disclaimer, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would read it again as it is a relatively quick and beautifully written, yet easy, read.
