What a fascinating book! The author, Michael Pollan, begins by noting an American paradox (Page 3): ". . .a notably unhealthy people obsessed by the idea of living healthily." He examines three different food chains--from beginning to end, from the plants to a full meal at diner. So, there are three parts to the book, one for each of the food chains: the industrial, organic, and hunter-gatherer. The first part, the industrial, begins with the history of corn (and its dependence on human presence for success), how corn is grown, how it is used, and how it affects out meals at the end of the day. While we may not eat the corn grown in the field, the products of corn feed cattle, create food additives, and so on. Indeed, he points out that about ¼ of the items in any supermarket contain corn in one form or another. It steps back from corn and looks at the larger picture of mass production of food. Parts of this process are chilling--mass slaughter of cattle, for instance. He notes the process by which Chicken McNuggets come about. Part II examines alternatives to industrial farming (as exemplified by the first section of the book), for instance, farms with an emphasis on grass. Here, a meal is compiled from items from such a source. In some ways, though, it is Part III that is especially fascinating. Here, the author procures the ingredients for a dinner, which he then largely prepares himself (with some help from a friend!). This includes harvesting a wild pig, gathering mushrooms, capturing bacteria from the air to use to create homemade bread, using produce from his own garden. . . . And so on. The glitches that he encountered are enjoyable to read about (e.g., his failure to collect natural salt). The book is very readable and makes many good points. But, in the end, perhaps the best thing about this book is that it makes us reflect on how food is produced and what goes into what we eat. And it pushes us to ask if there are certain ways that might be better than others. Thought provoking. . . .

I'm 13 and as a requirement for my AP Human Geography Class I read this book. I enjoyed the language and style of writing even though it was complicated and slightly hard to understand in some spots. The rich descriptions of landscapes and emotions, took me through a range of feelings and made me confront "the omnivores dilemma" head on. This book is very informative and has helped me understand more about the food system. It has also given me hope that I will be able to see Joel Salatin's dream in my lifetime. I don't feel like there was a clear answer on what an individual could do to help the cause, but I'm sure it's not hard to find on the internet with food being such a popular subject nowadays. I would recommend this book to anybody, not only interested in food but human nature, the relationships between plants, animals, and fungi, government, and an opportunity for a richer, more natural life.

To be or not to be a vegetarian? This is a very interesting book - well thought out and investigated. I am not certain that I want to consume meat again as Pollan tells the reader how these feeder lot cows, pigs and chickens actually live and die. Really, not my idea of humane. Just as interesting is his investigation of corn. It is amazing how corn is in absolutely everything from high-fructose corn syrup to fish food; gasoline to paint; fish to .... well, you get the idea. While more and more acreage is devoted to mono-crops, chiefly corn, we are the "benefactors" of everything that is corn related. Feed lot cattle are fed corn to fatten them up even though it makes them terribly sick and reduces the number of valuable nutrients available to grass fed cows. Multiply that by lamb, chicken, goat, salmon, tilapia, shrimp and you get an idea of why you are eating corn at every meal whether you know it or not. Compound this with the fact that 3 companies control the corn product from seed to pesticide to fertilizer and this monoculture is there to get you in one way or another. Corn that can be sprayed with pesticides that kill everything except the corn - bugs, weeds..... Makes you wonder what you are eating. Anyhow, Pollan has done a wonderful job investigating the food chain and its effect on the environment be it our internal flora or life on earth.

Omnivore's Dilemma was assigned to me in an upper-level economics course, along with other similar books. From the very lengthy list of books, this and Rising Powers, Shrinking Planet: The New Geopolitics of Energy were my absolute favorites. To be upfront, this book it is moderate to leftist in its opinions, as is Michael Klare's book, but both books opened my eyes to an entirely new way of thinking about my Economics & Policy degree. Years later, I'm still referencing them in papers & lectures I give. I highly recommend them to people in all disciplines, including casual readers who are just beginning to inform themselves about these topics. Michael Pollan wrote this book in a casual manner, as if sitting around a table with the reader and having a conversation about this great journey he took, yet at the end of the conversation the reader is left with a great amount of knowledge that they can use in countless ways. A great, fun read that I can't imagine anyone not liking. I can't recommend this book more! Happy Readings!!!

How to Be Alone: If You Want To, and Even If You Don't, by Lane Moore

Review

“Lane Moore is one of the most talented people I know and I’m so glad even more people will be able to read her words.”— Mara Wilson, author of Where Am I Now?: True Stories of Girlhood and Accidental Fame“How to Be Alone feels like peeling back your best friend’s skull and jumping into her brain. Lane is so open and funny and honest; I never want to be alone if it means I can’t have her with me. What a gift.” — Samantha Irby, New York Times bestselling author of Meaty and We Are Never Meeting in Real Life“How to Be Alone is like a song that pops up on the radio and lifts your spirits . . . so special, elegant, and true. It’s spectacular and truly personal. This book is with me every day, and it helps so much.”—  Caroline Kepnes, author of You, Hidden Bodies, and Providence“How to Be Alone is the book I wish I had read in my early twenties. I truly believe it would have saved me a world of pain. The moment I met her I felt like I had known her my entire life. This book will make everyone smart enough to read it feel the same exact way.”— Laura Benanti, Tony Award-winning actress“Within this compassionately told memoir, Moore offers hard-won advice for those looking to get beyond a painful past.” — Publishers Weekly "Lane Moore turns a dismal childhood into laughs. [Her] story offers insights about the effects of childhood trauma and our capacity for resilience."— The Washington Post"It is [Lane's] thoughtfulness and compassion that will make How to Be Alone resonate with readers long after finishing the last page . . . Moore’s book is the empathetic friend you’ve been searching for your whole life."— CURVE MAGAZINE“An irreverent, candidly introspective exploration of toiling with loneliness that will leave readers feeling not so alone.”— Kirkus Reviews“The essays are whip-smart, pithy, and full of an honest, conversational charm that sets Moore apart.”— Booklist"One woman's wry, wise, sometimes funny and often melancholy reminder that friends can be demanding and complicating, love is imperfect and obligating, and you can't count on a hard-charging cavalry of people who were just right for you to come riding over the hill and sweep you away."— NPR's Weekend Edition "The most epic, incredible, soaring parts of your story, are the places where you’re tender, and funny, but also so harrowingly sad and devastated. Your commitment to survival is more than a notion; it’s a balm, an affirmation, an eternal love note, and a sacred love manifestation that starts as a whisper and rises into the atmosphere. How to be Alone gave me closure. What a gift it is to know that there’s another person in the world who’s so brave and true to her spirit that she survived the hardest parts of being alive. Instead of sinking into despair or madness; being waylaid by bitterness or tragedy; or turning the grueling and terrifying dark of isolation against yourself, you’ve transmuted it into a fire so bright that it blazes brilliantly, with a classic, universal humanity. James Baldwin said, “You think your heartbreak is unprecedented in the world, and then you read. How To Be Alone is like that."— Bitch Media "Honest, hilarious, and deeply intimate. How to Be Alone is a profound first book from a truly talented writer."— Bustle "[How to be Alone] pulls no punches . . . Readers will find themselves in her stories, and even if they don’t, they will come away from this book having learned something. A great book for all ages but should be required reading for 20-somethings navigating young adulthood."— New York Post "[A] bracingly honest memoir...Moore is especially equipped to address the taboo of loneliness, along with other adult problems, with hilarity and aptness."— REFINERY 29 "Even if you don’t know Lane personally, she still feels like someone you’ve known for years. And that’s exactly what reading How to Be Alone feels like: having an honest conversation with an old friend."— Hello Giggles "In funny, super relatable, and smack-you-in-the-face-with-how-thoughtful-it-is prose, Moore talks about crushes, identity, feminism, and finding self-worth when everything inside you is telling you that you kind of suck. Funny enough, How to Be Alone made me feel a lot less alone."— Marie Claire "Enter Lane Moore, who is the cutest human, creating relatable comedic material that is so raw, you’ll want to cry and cuddle with her— partly because she point-blank states that she craves comfortable, platonic cuddling, and partly because you’ve realized, while reading, how much you crave it, too."— Sometimes Snarky "It might sound like a downer, but she manages to add a lot of humor along the way."— Bustle "While Moore is delving into some of the most difficult moments of her life, she does it with wit and humor in a way that makes this book an enjoyable read."— BITCH MAGAZINE "How to Be Alone by Lane Moore isn’t a self-help book or one about mental illness but I included it because I think you might find some encouragement within the pages of this book."— All the Good Books

#2,312 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I met Lane once a few months ago at a party during a time in my life when I was desperate to overcome my social anxiety so I could make new friends. After awkwardly inserting myself into a conversation about The Office, she mentioned writing a chapter about Jim Halpert in her upcoming book, “How to Be Alone”, and I knew I had to read it because boy did I need that instruction in my life. As a person who gets attached too easily, who too desperately wants to be liked and loved and have someone whom to give the overwhelming amounts of love in my heart, I fully expected this book to teach me how to not be miserable about not having friends and being painfully single or at least not to be so desperate for love.Instead what I got was quite the opposite of the title of the book, a sense I was not alone. Lane is at times painfully honest about how alone she has been and felt, but there is no bitterness. You see how great her capacity to love is, and you truly feel that love, as if she‘s left a piece of her heart on the page, just for you. It seems so rare these days to find people who are not shy about expressing how terribly alone they have felt, but also how deeply they care and love and all the things they want for themselves and so very much need. Many of the pages are now earmarked because I found so much of myself in this book and I want to go back and read those pages to remind myself I’m not alone in the things I feel, but more importantly that it’s ok to feel them. There are so many more amazing things to be said about this book, and I know others will find themselves in these pages just like I did. If you’ve ever experienced a time in your life when you’ve felt truly alone, this book is for you.

This is like sandpaper for your heart where it needed to be smoothed out so badly because you keep getting splinters from the rough bits but god the sanding hurts too.

I’m not sure I can put how I feel about this book into words, but I’ll try. The word “alone’ has always summarized my life, and yet Lane has brought depth and meaning to my state of alone-ness I did not know I was seeking. I, too, was that kid who did everything to escape, to go outside, with friends, with a boyfriend, alone down by the creek, driving the back roads of my county once I had my license – which was the very day I turned sixteen – anything to be away from my house and revolving door of my mother and her endless parade boyfriends and relationships. Superficially, my (divorced) parents appeared congenial and cooperative to onlookers, and thus, I imagine others believed I was treated well. My (forced) independence at ages as young as six when I was a latch-key kid was celebrated as a commendable achievement. This so-called independence was a crutch enabling my parents to avoid all nurturing and care setting me up for a lifetime of abandonment and trust issues because no one was ever there for me.Tears of empathy and solidarity welled in my eyes as I read Emergency Contact Left Blank because I knew I found a kindred soul. I, too, am the kind of orphan that makes sense to no one, and Lane’s writing has made me feel seen in ways over twenty-years of therapy sessions have not. She has made me laugh at my condition and bridged a path toward acceptance that there will never be a resolution for my childhood. This book is the Reality Bites of 2018, and the companion that gets me.

When I preordered this book, I felt like it was coming at just the right time in my life. Having now inhaled it in one sitting, I don't think there could have ever been a wrong time.Moore can't help but imbibe every page with humor, regardless of the subject matter, and even when I was reading through tears (which I did no less than six times, folks!) I was laughing out loud.I've struggled since high school with how to navigate romantic relationships. I wrote a paper in my junior year about my resistance to pressure to lower my standards and ‘settle’, and over a decade later not much has changed. That apparent self-confidence is completely at odds with my debilitating fear of ending up never making that connection I'm holding out for--a fear that looms larger as every day brings me closer to turning 30.This book was one of the first pieces of pop culture I've encountered that validated that unsustainable dichotomy, instead of spending untold time and energy trying to ‘see what's out there’. That happiness I'm looking for cannot be forced. This is true not just for romantic relationships but for family and friends as well, and Moore doesn't seem to hold anything back when she includes visceral personal anecdotes to propel this book beyond a mere memoir or self-help book and towards something that is far greater than the sum of its parts.I would tell you all the ways, big and small, I felt like this book resonated with me so personally and so specifically, but I get the feeling that everyone will find something that speaks almost scarily directly to their personal experiences here. Lane Moore has done a monumentally courageous thing with How To Be Alone, and I could not be more grateful to her for that.

I ordered this as soon as I heard Lane's interview on NPR, as this 60-something woman resonated deeply with so much of what she said. I devoured it, and had to wait for the tears to stop before I could read the acknowledgments. Lane is an old soul who beautifully captures the pain and potential of aloneness at any age. Lane's story and honest convictions will inspire many, and this is a book I will return to on a regular basis for reassurance and affirmation.

Lane Moore emptied her soul to describe her own survival. And somehow it's more funny than sad/horrifying. Lane's writing style puts you in her car, on a bad date, figuring out how to arrange furniture in a room with a dirt floor while rapists lurk outside... and you'll feel like she's telling you this while you're sitting on couches under blankets and cry-laughing. I want to give this to everyone so they can feel the warm assurance of Lane's voice that is a genius mix of devastating and triumphant, but mostly the latter. Is it weird to be proud of an author you've never met? That's me with this book. Bravo.

I am super happy with these pads and rotors... The price vs product is amazing... There is a noticeable difference in braking power .... I would strongly recommend draining all of the brake fluid from your brake systems and replacing it with new fluid... Brake fluid is hydroscopic it will obsorb moisture and junk up builds in the system... This will make your pedel feel soft even with good pads and rotors... I drive a 99 regal gs and these pads and rotors made an amazing difference in braking.... I would strongly recommend these to anyone driving your average car looking for a inexpensive upgrade.... I've got about 4k miles on these and its easy to see that they are a great product....

The book feels like good quality. Each score card takes up one page. It is printed on fronts and backs. The pages do not tear out of this book which would have been helpful. Would have been a 5 star review but because the image of the scorecard was blown up so much to fit a full sheet of paper it is a little on the blurry side. It is however large enough that you have plenty of room to write your scores down and cross them out when your bad math skills are pointed out by the other players.

It looks like this was "printed to order". The pages are copied from someplace and then bound into a book. You have to rip the pages out to give a sheet to someone else. The copies are blurry and look cheap. It's nice to have the sheets bigger, but not necessary and it would be helpful to have the pages perforated to remove without ripping. Maybe have them on a glued pad?

I Absolutly love these!! I thought when I ordered they were the snare regular size score cards..to my surprise they are the size of a note book. Which is great especially for my mom who I take care of and has trouble seeing..these are a god send. Thank you! And for those complaining about a little misprint..come on..you know what scores go there..it states it on the left side.

Every page contained the error to count only Aces on twos, threes, fours, fives, and sixes. If one follows the instructions, the 63 required for the 35 bonus points would never be reached. I'll stick with official Yahtzee score pads from now on.

Several misprints in scoring instructions - looks like they cut and paste the same info in too many places. Also, there is no way to easily remove used scoresheets from the book... perforations would have been nice.Honestly, the scoresheets are too large...seems like a waste of materials. I would rather have more scoresheets.

The printing is BLURRY, there are typos in the scoring, there's no perforation to take pages out. Not a quality product. I should have read the reviews.

Although the size is useful, the scorecard is defective. It is supposed to say count only aces, twos, threes, etc. However, all the lines say count only aces. Someone should have seen this before it was shipped out. Disappointing Amazon!

Review

"The power of self-love is extremely prominent in her poignant verses and serves to cure the broken and give hope to people who feel as though there is none left." (Dominique Etzel, Alloy)"Inspiring the poetry-sequenced narrative of her first book of prose, I Love My Love, Reyna's childhood—which was caught between the dysfunctional relationship of her two parents—breathes substance into her poetry." (Diamond Alexis, BET.com)"If you've never read poetry on the beach, we highly recommend that you do. And we highly recommend that you start with Reyna Biddy's I Love My Love." (Elizabeth Entenman, HelloGiggles)"This collection feels deeply personal, almost as if the poems are lifted from a diary, which might allow readers to feel a deep sense of connection." (Kathryn Gullo, VOYA Magazine)"She [Reyna] is strong through her suffering, loving despite her heartache, and soaks in all the love and lessons around her to give it back tenfold." (Jessie Ma, FabFitFun)

The audio of this is amazing, it's a collection of a few of the poems in this book but it makes me read the paper versions in her soft, soothing voice. It's honest poetry, it seems as if she's more concerned about getting the feelings of raw emotion out rather than making a rhyme. She has an original style, and I cannot wait for the second book. She puts into words what my heart cannot explain, and I thank her for that.

i was really excited when i first stumbled across this book but in all honesty, i ended feeling a bit underwhelmed by it. this really was just a very hit or miss book for me; there were some poems i absolutely loved, while there were others that i just couldn't really connect with, whether it be because of the content or the overall format. but that is not to say that reyna biddy is a bad writer, or that i didn't love the themes within the poems, and the message that the author was trying to convey. it was raw. it was unapologetic. it was messy. it was heartbreaking. but ultimately, it was very real & empowering. reyna certainly did not hold back, & i admire her for that. i also loved that this collection focused on love, and how complex it can be in all its different forms.this really was a very emotional and expressive book, written by a very passionate and strong woman, but unfortunately it just really wasn't my cup of tea. however, i do think that reyna really is a talented writer & i would certainly be open to reading more of her work in the future!

I truly recommend this book to anyone who is struggling with self love and how to love them self and all the hurt and heartbreaks and destroyed you. This books helps you to recover from agony. This book was truly so eye opening for me and help me recover and love myself and to fall in love with myself always to leave toxic relationships because your love and happiness is more important then the hurt and fact love a partner can cause you. She’s one of my favorite author and truly someone I look up to. I’m really not a religious person but she brought me more to god then i ever felt before. She made my soul to rest. This book shoe be an award winning book !!!!!!! Truly recomend and worth spending your money on !!!

I'm not the biggest fan of poetry, and I was skeptical about a book of spoken word poetry, but I loved this book! I devoured it in one night and read it two more times over the course of a week. Reyna is such a talented writer, she masterfully expresses the thoughts and feelings I've been unable to put words to. Its hard to tell someone to love themselves without it coming off as cheesey or a too large a concept to handle. How does one write a book advising someone to love themselves without it coming off as a, I'm superior to you because I've already figured this out and don't you wish you could be like me vibe. Every female should read this book. I'm going to buy it for my cousin who's 16 I think she'll enjoy it.

i read the preview for this book before buying it, the poem she wrote about her mother in the beginning of the book made me cry and that’s why i ordered it. i thought it was going to be more poetry like that, about family and exploring those feelings but it’s mostly about the men that broke her heart and how she’s feeling afterwards with bits of family sprinkled in. a little disappointing but she’s not a bad writer, i’m still glad i bought it

Reyna has a true gift , the way she writes makes me feel as though she is speaking to my soul. All of us have been in love and understand the pain associated with rejection , one-sided relationships, and infidelity. She shines light on feelings we try to suppress and provides us with a solution, well her solution to healing her heart and mind. Even in her imperfections she takes us on a journey of her growth and that's what makes this book perfect. The poems are very relatable and she does an amazing job articulating her words to make clear points. I highly recommend this book to all readers

I knew I'd fall in love with this book when I first read the description, which is exactly what happened. (Maybe because I knew I'd be able to relate to a lot of her material) but even if you can't relate to it personally, she did a phenomenal job delivering her story and definitely worth the read. I'm now a huge fan and I look forward to purchasing and reading more! Love love love!!!!

This book is honestly my holy grail for the first time I honestly saw some of my feelings on paper and which has allowed me to now start addressing them. 10/10 would recommend. If something led you to this page and to read this review please purchase it you won’t regret how fulfilling it is...

It was a gift for the retiring mailman.

A great book!

Filled with information for the curious and the knowledgeable. Entices one to travel and discover!

There are directions and other info for finding and visiting lighthouses. They do not always show all lights for a given area. The photos are all color. I own 3 of these books. There are not many other guide books out there so if you are looking for guide books these are good to have. Since there are so many books in this series I thought I'd help people find them easier. This is the series.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~American LighthousesCalifornia LighthousesEastern Great Lakes Lighthouses - I own this oneWestern Great Lakes Lighthouses - I own this oneSoutheastern Lighthouses - I own this oneSouthern LighthousesNew England LighthousesMid Atlantic LighthousesGulf Coast Lighthouses

Bruce Roberts may be the best lighthouse photographer working in America. Any of the books by him and his partner Ray Jones are well worth owning. They include great lighthouse photos, a little story from Jones about each one and directions as to how to get to them. The lighthouse lover could scarcely ask for more.

Quality of photos was very poor. I want to see details of the various lighthouse not photos of the sky, trees or water. Photos of dark shaded lighthouse against a dark background on a very clouded day does not make for good photography. I have seen better pictures on the internet.

The book I received was VERY used!!!! It took 10 days for them to even start to ship it out. I missed the birthday I intended the book for--. It took over two weeks for me to receive the book.

For the price there should be more content in this book.

Update: the book has mistakes in it. Look at page 101 ENT values and compare them to NEC 2017. These values were changed in 2014 but they never made it to Ugly's. And today I noticed even more mistakes in pipe fill tables. I did get 2017 Edition, not sure if they are all like this or just mine, so make sure you check!PS. I got a replacement and its the same. I dont think these are some crucial mistakes but its unacceptable thats why its 1 star. We had to use these tables in class for calculations on test, if you use this book you will get a wrong answer. Other then that its ok for references in general.

Nice quality product. Recommended. Given to my son who is in his latter years of his apprenticeship. He was very grateful and claimed they will help him as he continues through his electrical apprenticeship.

Fantastic. It is compact and comes with the commonly used electrical formulas, and tables for electrical construction. I recommend it in my opinion

Always Loved these pocket books. Makes life soo much easier. They also have a great app now too.i would buy this again.

This is an Excellent reference booklet for anyone who is doing Electrical Design Work. I will definitely be using this booklet for the foreseeable future. It is small enough to carry almost anywhere. Very helpful for Electricians or Electrical Students

Excellent reference booklet for Electrical Design Work.Have been using the booklet for many years, purchased this one as an upgrade of the older version I have.Highly recommended.

My son, an electrician, was very happy with the book. Updated and convenient!

This book is a needed reference book for all electricians. I purchase a new one each time a NEC NFPA70 code cycle changes. I would be lost without it.

From the Inside Flap

The McCarthy era is generally considered the worst period of political repression in recent American history. But while the famous question, "Are you now or have you ever been a member of the Communist Party?" resonated in the halls of Congress, security officials were posing another question at least as frequently, if more discreetly: "Information has come to the attention of the Civil Service Commission that you are a homosexual. What comment do you care to make?"Historian David K. Johnson here relates the frightening, untold story of how, during the Cold War, homosexuals were considered as dangerous a threat to national security as Communists. Charges that the Roosevelt and Truman administrations were havens for homosexuals proved a potent political weapon, sparking a "Lavender Scare" more vehement and long-lasting than McCarthy's Red Scare. Relying on newly declassified documents, years of research in the records of the National Archives and the FBI, and interviews with former civil servants, Johnson recreates the vibrant gay subculture that flourished in New Deal-era Washington and takes us inside the security interrogation rooms where thousands of Americans were questioned about their sex lives. The homosexual purges ended promising careers, ruined lives, and pushed many to suicide. But, as Johnson also shows, the purges brought victims together to protest their treatment, helping launch a new civil rights struggle. The Lavender Scare shatters the myth that homosexuality has only recently become a national political issue, changing the way we think about both the McCarthy era and the origins of the gay rights movement. And perhaps just as importantly, this book is a cautionary tale, reminding us of how acts taken by the government in the name of "national security" during the Cold War resulted in the infringement of the civil liberties of thousands of Americans.

I've always been fascinated by the McCarthy era. It always seemed to me that the nation teetered on the brink of totalitarianism for several years during the 1950s. Fortunately, the nation managed to pull itself back from the brink. In The Lavender Scare author David K. Johnson sheds light into the dark corner or the McCarthy era and uncovers a time when the federal government targeted gay and lesbian employees for prosecution and firing because it was believed that simply being gay made then more vulnerable to blackmail by foreign agents. (It doesn't seem to have occurred to the government that a straight married man involved in an affair stood the same risk of blackmail.)Wisconsin Sen. Joe McCarthy often gets credit for starting the "lavender scare" along with the witch hunts seeking to oust current and former Communists from the government. However, as Johnson points out, McCarthy actually had little to do directly with the anti-homosexual purges. But in the mind of the public in the 1950s McCarthy was forever linked with the lavender scare because the public did not see the distinction between the issues of disloyalty posed by Communists and the potential security risks posed by gays and lesbians. The anti-gay purges began in the State Department but soon spread to all federal offices as well as private companies that held government contracts. While Washington, D.C. had a reputation for tolerance before World War II, the post-war years saw that tolerance reversed. Vice officers busted hapless men for as little as making eye contact in bars, in parks and on the street. Law enforcement agencies were only too happy to share their arrest reports with government officials. Gays and lesbians were arrested at private dinner parties and interrogated to identify their friends. When a gay employee was identified, Civil Service investigators were called in for coercive interogations.During the darkest days of the lavender scare many gays and lesbians simply "disappeared." Some moved back to their home towns in the hope their shame wouldn't follow them. Some had to take menial jobs because the careers they had prepared for were forever barred to them. Some chose to end their own lives. And some found a new calling. Among them were Harry Hay, founder of the Mattachine Society in California and Frank Kameny who founded the Mattachine Society of Washington.Kameny especially comes across as a hero. Once an astronomer who was working under a government contract, when rumors of his homosexuality began to spread he was called Washington and fired. He began a court fight that ultimately proved futile, but along they way he gained the courage to come out as a gay man and speak publicly about the devastation of the government's anti-gay purges.I've encountered references to the anti-gay purges in various histories of the time that I read. Lavender Scare is the first book I've ever read to deal specifically with the subject. It seems well researched and a work of solid scholarship in addition to being a very readable book.

I am reviewing this book based on the Kindle version. The only problem i have with the Kindle version is that the footnotes, which in a book like this are very important, are not directly accessible as with other Kindle books. I can see the footnote number, but cannot click on the number to get to the actual note. I hope the producers of this book will correct this problem. As for the content, this well written book was an eye opener for me. The author lays out the events in a manner that makes clear how the homosexual panic took hold as a tool for the Republicans wanting to oust a Democratic president and cast aspersions on the New Deal. It also reveals how some in the press used it as a means to improve their circulation by playing on the public's fear of the gay/lesbian "other". When i was taught about the McCarthy era there was NO information provided about the attack on the gay/lesbian community. This book is the only one to bring this dark period of hysteria into the cold light of day where i hope we will learn some important lessons. This book and Making Gay History are the two books i recommend to friends who want to learn about LGBT history. The two books are complements in that The Lavender Scare: The Cold War Persecution of Gays and Lesbians in the Federal Government.(Book review): An article from: The Historian covers in detail one period of LGBT history that has been all but lost, yet, it was important in driving the events presented in Making Gay History far more than the Stonewall incident. Both make great gifts and recently my book club decided to make The Lavender Scare our monthly read.I gave this only four stars because the Kindle footnotes are not live. Given the importance of the footnotes, live notes are important because they provide easy access to the footnotes in a way that is conducive to maintaining reading flow. Without the live footnotes i've been forced to use a second kindle to maintain access to the foot notes. Should the authors release a version with live footnotes i will change my review to 5 stars.

I remember growing up and reading in the newspaper of McCarthyism in full swing. The US government, especially the State Department, was exceptionally hostile to gays. There were witch hunts. Being gay was equalled with being communist, and this was during the Cold War. People lost their jobs, guys killed themselves when outed, these were terrible un-accepting times for gays. It's hard to comprehend how much things have changed for the better. Fascinating history, well-written.

I got my degree in history, and yet somehow I managed to make it until my senior year before I even discovered that this event happened. The Red Scare is a well-known period, but this book illuminated another side of it that is severely overlooked in most courses, lectures, books and documentaries. I would have to rate the book highly just for bringing it to light, but the fact that it's well-written is a nice bonus, too.

Detailed accounting backed by first hand accounts, newspaper articles of the day, the Congressional Record including previously unavailable access to the reports of the Hovey Commission of the horrors of the dark ages for gay people in the U.S.A. A must read for any one who wants to know the depths of depravity that the government is capable of descending in persecution of minorities ... sexual, gender and racial.

This book relays the hidden history of persecution against American citizens for their personal lives. Most don’t realize how systematic and pervasive this was.

This not only speaks about what happened during this time and hell that was the lives of many GLBT, but it also explains how this became a Cold War witch hunt. Loyal American citizens were stripped of everything even on the suspicion of being gay. Excellent source for writing a paper with lots of primary source interviews you can't find elsewhere.
