This is a very good book. It is well laid-out and cover the subject well. I like the cookbook format. I have already used several of the recipes. Cricket works for Infoblox. Infoblox sells an industry leading DNS appliance, which I highly recommend. I have worked with DNS since 1996 and have met Cricket. He really knows the subject matter. I wish him well.

Cricket Liu did a very good job in writing it.

When I learned that Ryan Grant was publishing the great works of Catholic theology that he is in English for the first time under the imprint "Mediatrix Press," I was interested, but I also had reservations about the fact that it is a self-publishing venture. This was the first Mediatrix Press book I read. Sadly, it has made clear that Grant's translation skills are not up to the task he has set himself. I will give a few representative examples of the mistakes in diction and in simple comprehension of Bellarmine's Latin that occur all throughout the book.In chapter 1, Bellarmine cites an analogy from St Augustine about how when you build a house, you have to build the foundation, then the walls, and then, as Grant has it, "the roof and different hardware." Hardware? Surely what Bellarmine expects to be installed after the roof is what we would call the FURNITURE, even if "hardware" would be a perfectly apt translation of the word "instrumenta" in another context. Incidentally, Grant here repeats Bellarmine's citation of Augustine, "Ser. 22 de verb. Domini."; a reference to a modern edition, which would number this sermon 20/A, would have been welcome. In chapter 2, Bellarmine mentions the divine nature and proceeds to give a definition of it, introduced by the idiomatic phrase "hoc est," meaning "that is" (Oxford Latin Dictionary "hic" 10c). But Grant translates it literally as "this is": "accordingly it could only be one true Godhead, this is, only one nature and essence, infinite power..."And yet what Bellarmine actually said is that the divine nature is infinitely powerful. While Bellarmine would certainly confess that God's nature is His infinite power (infinita potestas), here he has used an adjective (potens) to modify the predicate "nature and essence," modified by the adverb "infinitely" (infinite).This literalism continues to mar the translation in chapter III, when St Robert begins to explain the Apostles' Creed. To the question of why God is called the Father, Grant has him say that God is the Father of Jesus Christ by nature; "the Father of all goods" by adoption; and the Father of all creatures by creation. But in this context, we must understand "bonorum" as meaning "the Father of all the good," or better, "the Father of all good men."Grant's weakness in basic Latin grammar then makes a muddle of an analogy involving a soldier. Here is what Bellarmine has written: "But if you shall say that God is not able to die or to sin, and therefore cannot do all things; I respond, that to be able to die and to sin is not power, but weakness, and if it should be said of a certain pugnacious soldier, that he can conquer all, and cannot be conquered by anyone, certainly nothing is taken away from the strength of that man by saying that he cannot be conquered, because to be able to be conquered is not strength, but weakness."Grant has: "But if someone would say that God cannot die or sin, so He can't really do everything; then I answer that to die and sin are not in potency, but impotency, and if one were to speak about any aggressive soldier you like, that he cannot conquer all things nor indeed can be conquered by any one, then one has not really detracted from his strength by saying that he cannot be conquered, because to be conquered is not strength but weakness."First of all, the phrase "not in potency, but impotency" cannot be passed over in silence. Perhaps it was influenced by a misguided idea that we are dealing here with the Scholastic metaphysical concept of potency and and act. But what's much worse is that Grant has made the analogy about the soldier rather confusing by changing him from an invincible soldier who can conquer all into an invincible soldier who can conquer only some. Evidently he has some concept that "nec" means "nor," but doesn't realise that it doesn't have to join two clauses that are both negated as in "neither...nor."In a question about how Christ could die when he is God, Bellarmine writes in explanation of Christ's two natures: "In quantum porro Deus est, non potest pati nec mori: in quantum autem homo est, pati morique potest." That is, "moreover, inasmuch as he is God, he can neither suffer nor die: inasmuch, however, as he is a man, he can suffer and die." Grant amazingly turns Bellarmine's attention to the immortality of the divine nature, having him write: "Again, insofar as God is, He can neither suffer nor die, but insofar as He is man, He can suffer and die." I really do not know how Grant muddled through the book if a clause like "[Christus] Deus est" caused him such difficulties.In the immediately following question, Grant does not seem to understand what Bellarmine is saying about Christ's atonement. The question is why so many men are damned if Christ has made satisfaction for the sins of all. Bellarmine writes, "Christ indeed has abundantly made satisfaction for the sins of all men, but all the same it is necessary for that satisfaction to be applied by this man and by that one to himself in particular." In his translation, Grant capitalises "Himself," indicating that it is necessary that each man apply Christ's sacrifice to Christ.In another question, it is asked whether Christ is said to sit at the right hand of the Father "in quantum Deus solum est, an vero etiam in quantum homo?", that is, "only inasmuch as he is God, or also inasmuch as he is man?" Grant writes, "insofar as He alone is God." If "solum" were an adjective meaning "alone," it would have to be "solus" to agree with the subject "Christus" (just as the predicate "Deus" does). If morphology did not reveal this adverb's meaning to Grant, the context should have.Examples could be multiplied, like when Grant uses the word "His" not understanding that the pronoun "cuius" refers to the theological virtue of faith rather than God. Ultimately, enough of the meaning gets through that you can learn from this book. The only translation choice that really suggests theological error is when Bellarmine says the grace of forgiveness of sins cannot be found outside the Church, and it is translated in a way that can be taken to mean no grace at all can be found outside the Church. Still, the translation repeatedly makes you hope there has been some mistake and an early draft has been published as the Kindle edition, as the note-to-self "[revise]" that has been left in the text suggests. In my opinion, your money is better spent on a Latin textbook so you can read Bellarmine yourself.

This book was recommended by Rorate Caeli. I have not read it yet. But being that they recommend it, it is sure to be authentical Catholic teaching. Thank you & God bless.

This, to me, is NOT 150 activities. The first 150+pages are divided into four sections: a dozen or so recipes for slime, a dozen or so recipes for play-dough, several different recipes for paint, and several different ideas for playscapes. To me, those are variations on 4 activities, not 100 or so different things to occupy a kid. So disappointing.If I had been looking for a book full of ways to make my own slime/paint/play-doh, I might have liked this book. As it is, though, I find it pretty useless.

I honestly expected completely different content based off the title. I didn't read any reviews. Most of the book is more of a recipe book for baby/kid safe playing material (foam, goo, slime, paints). It's a very artsy crafty book but extremely well organized and if you have the time & interest I think it could be a great addition to your book collection. The chapters each begin with an introduction and the authors experience and tips. The chapters are: slimes, doughs, paints, small worlds, simple sensory activities, and do it yourself toys. Each activity lists prep time, ages (baby/toddler/preschoolers/5+) ingredients/supplies, detailed instructions, and what I like is that there are also variations/troubleshooting/budget tips. It also lists if it's dye free, taste safe, dairy/gluten/egg/soy etc free. Also there are instructions on turning what you make into art. The book ends with information on the science behind the activities, where to find supplies, and additional resources. If you're looking for activities for your kids to do on their own this is not the book. These are activities that require your involvement and can end up being very messy. The recipes are easy and simple and cost friendly. Most of the items you'll probably have and need to only get one or two others. I have purchased several kinds of these books, but this one has quickly become my favorite! First. I love that the author has taken the time to breakdown each activity according to a simple key highlighting if it's something safe to taste, and if it contains dyes or allergens. The pictures are great, simple, but easy enough to see what the end product should/could look like and each activity has at least one picture. I appreciate each activity has a very easy guide for how long it will take to make/prep, and what ages it would be best for. I have done at least 10 projects and they have all been huge hits with my toddler, make me look like mother of the year, but really aren't a lot of work. I love that my little one is learning through play, and I really love that the ingredients list doesn't contain a long list of ingredients that are hard to find. This is the book to buy if you are looking for crafty, fun, and sensory projects for your little one, don't look any further, just buy it. I would say most of these activities are best suited for toddlers to early school age, but I could definitely see some use for older elementary school age children as well.

Not very thrilled with this book. It's not 150 "different" activities it's 100 ways to make playdough/cloud dough and then the rest are repeated activities in different variations. Not what I was looking for at all.

I am an occupational therapist so there were a lot of things in this book I have seen before, it has great recipes for moon sand, paint and doughs . Good book for sensory play, however I was looking for more varied types of activities like crafts and holiday/season specific games or activities. I like how it labels each activity with allergy information and advice of appropriate age for each activity.

What an amazing resource for fun things to do with your kids! I purchased all three books and I must say they are all wonderful and well worth the investment. We have completed several of the projects already and plan to do some every week. There are so many fun things and variations that it will take us all year to complete and then we can start all over again! What I love most about the projects is most of them use every day things you have at your house and if you don't have something it's not an expensive item to buy especially if you are a member of Sams or Costco. I highly recommend the liquid watercolors as they are fun to work with, do not stain and have a much more vibrant color. I honestly don't know who is having more fun, the kids playing in all of our creations or me getting to prepare and make the projects! It is fun for the entire family and gives you plenty to do inside or outside. The learning that happens is absolutely wonderful!!

I love this book. I first checked it out at the library to see if I wanted to pay full price for it and I didn't hesitate. I particularly like the small worlds but will be trying more sensory stuff as well. I did try the chia seed water beads but was unsuccessful. I've since tried 2-3 other sensory activities that were hits. This is my new go to book for my 3 and 5 year olds. They love the small worlds and buying the little toob animals to go along with it is well worth it. Hours of fun. You add library books on all the animals from the small world and there is so much learning going on amidst the playing. Genius of the author! There are somethings in the book I won't be trying but that's okay. There's a ton I will! I will say this book is not for everyone. You have to be okay with messy and be willing to put some work into the activities the first time around. But well worth it!

I.loved this book which was eloquently written. The characters are nuanced and complex. Set in New York, following World War II, we, the readers, are constantly transported between two women from different worlds. We see shades of blatant anti-Semitism, each struggling with their own burdens. Perhaps we also see that Eleanor,the Jewish character has pre-conceived ideas about the Gentile world. Sometimes we see that bridges can be crossed when misconceptions are acknowledged and healing begins. Please read this book. I do not think that you will.regret it. Kudos to the author for an extraordinary tome.

Am I the only one who noticed that this story had no ending? It just stopped, with Patricia and Eleanor at the kitchen table, and Eleanor starts to speak. And that's it. We are never to know what she said. However, I really liked the story and it was enjoyable to read, but once or twice during the reading I felt like another writer had taken over. For instance, Eleanor hardly knew how to drive (the story was set in 1947) but for some reason she decided to take Patricia's Cadillac and then drove for hours thru traffic going over the speed limit. That was so out of character and not pertinent to anything. I thought the love story between Eleanor and Tom was mostly innocent till much later in the book when it became serious. This is definitely not a romance novel, since it mostly was centered around religion. I read it in a short time, and wish the ending had had a better wrap up.

A young Jewish woman recently out of her teaching job is on her way to an interview when her cab is hit by another cab. The wealthy woman in the other cab takes the young woman home with her and introduces her to her daughter, a polio victim. The teacher and the young girl hit it off and the Jewish woman is hired by the Gentile family to tutor the daughter. The Jewish woman is told to keep it a secret that she is Jewish...thus "Not Our Kind" but the story goes both ways. I enjoyed the story.

I just read Not Our Kind and loved it! It was a compulsive read ....I couldn't stop and when I had to, I rushed back to it.... in today's environment of intolerance this is such an important story.... I loved all the attention to fashion and loved Eleanor as a character.... smart, strong, honest, open-hearted, and courageous.Zeldis drew the world of an earlier New York so well.... I could 'feel' the atmospheres of Park Avenue versus immigrant Yorktown. The language and dialogue flowed so smoothly that I was simply transported from scene to scene, chapter to chapter... the coming of age of a young Jewish woman at a time when Jews were not entirely comfortable or accepted in the USA.... many young Jews don't know anything about this era and they should!I highly recommend this novel for those who love srtong character driven fiction and want to see into yesteryear with strong echoes in today's world.

In some ways this was an interesting book. But somehow some of it seemed stilted, and artificial. And I did not appreciate the leave-the-reader-hanging ending.

This was a book I expected to identify with and really like. I too was a child of the 1950’s and remember the summer fears of polio, of Jews not being welcomed at many clubs, of girls not thinking of college educations. Unfortunately, however, these themes were trivialized.Eleanor Moskowitz, a jewess with a Vassar degree was encouraged to change her name from Moskowitz to Moss and to not expect much in the way of opportunity. Once she had had a fling with a married teacher at the private school where she taught, she was essentially not hirable.Too much of the book from that point on seemed to focus on men behaving badly, and women caught in the crossfire. That was where the book lost my interest....I did finish it, but Not Our Kind was not my kind of book.

Honestly, the post War period was one I had not really thought of in terms of anti-semitism. I think I foolishly believed that the US fought World War Two, liberated the concentration camps and then anti-semitism was over. I had no idea that such tensions existed in NYC in the late 1940's, early 1950's. This novel does a great job of exploring the tensions created by social class and religion, between two disparate groups. I'm a huge fan of the TV show Mrs. Maizel and I loved getting another view of the Jewish experience in NYC during this time period. This would be a great book group read -- and I think it would make a great movie as well.

Sad, yet I feel it's always good to understand our history. How our forefathers treated each other because of our differences when we should be looking to what we have in common. Which is just what this book did.

Just a caution. My 11 year old was enjoying this book, until he came to this part: page 198: "...his mother fell down the stairs... [she] was hurt so badly that she couldn't move; she'd broken her legs and an arm, and she had other internal damage. Little Frederick was the only person who could help. but being so young [9] and frightened, he didn't know what to do. He simply held his mother at the bottom of the stairs and screamed. By the time they were discovered, Frederick's mother had died."I felt that was a little unnecessarily traumatic. If your child is a gentle soul, or a hero-type like mine, this may be a little disturbing. It gave him bad dreams. I would have liked to have known about this before he started reading it, so maybe another parent will benefit from the fore-knowledge.

My rating of 3 stars is probably lower than what my 4th and 5th grade readers of animal-fantasy will give it. For them, the ability for animals, zoo and those thought to be extinct, to travel between the natural world and a more fantastic one is likely to grab their attention immediately. Throwing in a group of four friends with a treehouse fort who seek out adventure, a missing club member, developing relationships between humans and animals, evil Sasquatch creatures, and some magic means that I will buy this series for both my libraries. It is my hope that in future installments that Chick backs off the over-describing and the grandstanding/gushing done by Mr. Darby as he pleads his case for the saving of the Secret Zoo and the council that supports its existence. I am also hoping for a bit more depth in the character development of our four Action Scouts and more subtlety in setting us up for subsequent books. With this being his first book and it having such a unique premise, I am looking forward to watching the series unfold and improve in literary quality. But I will purchase them one at a time as I read them to be sure that aspect does improve. I recommend this book for readers in grades 4-8 who enjoy series such as Mull’s Fablehaven and O’Hearn’s Pegasus.

I bought this book for my 7 (almost 8) year old Granddaughter. She loved it. Parts she read herself and parts I read to her. For her there were parts that were 'kinda scary' and parts that made her laugh out loud. She is thinking about passing book 1 on to a friend. I just ordered her book 2; to quote my Granddaughter, "I can't wait!".

The Secret Zoo by Bryan Chick is a fun, fast-paced story about friendship, family, and (best of all) awesome animals. Mr. Chick seamlessly blends mystery and magic into a modern fairy tale, part detective novel and part adventure into Narnia.I downloaded The Secret Zoo after hearing about it at a local elementary school. I'm glad I did. I read it out loud to my 10-year-old (at the time) son and wife. We all enjoyed the book. The main characters are nice kids that my son could identify with. He especially liked Richie, the comic-relief character and adorable goofball. All of the characters, though, took a backseat to the awesome animals. I think I've mentioned them. Along their adventures in the Secret Zoo, the Action Scouts (the name the heroes give themselves collectively) meet and befriend polar bears, rhinos, prairie dogs, and more. They also encounter scary (age appropriate) sasquatches! What's not to like?All animal fans and everyone who has ever wondered where all the locked doors and mysterious nooks and crannies in a zoo lead should read this fun book.

Short chapters, engaging story. Curious obsession with animal heads "rolling" and the word "rump" on the part of the author which induces giggles, but otherwise very enjoyable book broken into short chapters for reading at bedtime. My kids love it. A little spooky in places, but not so much that we had to stop reading. Even Disney movies have spooky themes. It's a multiple book series, so the story doesn't move much in each book. We're on book 3 now and hooked. Kids won't go to bed without it.

I read to my children each night age ( 7 & 9 ). I don't normally purchase a book with this many chapters but this book has held more sons attention nightly, they can't wait for me to read to them which make bed time much easier. P.S. I enjoy the story line as well, I highly recommend it.

My 7 year old loves this book and won't put it down. He struggles with some of the "bigger" words but overall doing well reading it. He is already looking forward to the next one.

I bought this to round out my series of Secret Zoo books and enjoyed it as much if not more than the others. I was glad to see the same characters continue in this book particularly because it is their individual personalities that help make the story. It was a quicker read than the other books in the series but still worth reading. Is suitable for an avid reader in the fourth grade and up. I have enjoyed the world Mr. Chick has created in his story line and can not wait for the next one. I recommend that you buy this book for your younger reader or yourself, even if you are a Grandmother like me!

The "Idiot's Guide" books have the worst name ever. If anyone spots you reading one of these bright orange tomes, they more than likely think you are an idiot.That's really not the case with this book. The guide to Spies and Espionage is an amazing intro to the field of espionage and international spying. Everything is presented clearly and with proper writing style (not too playful, not too stiff). For those looking for tons of gadgets and movie-like action, you may be disappointed, as the book focuses more on the history of spying rather than the procedures and rules of the game. Thrilling missions and incidents are retold with detail, yet also they are very brief. The book seems to strike a perfect balance without getting bogged down at all. You can breeze through a few chapters in an hour and still learn a great deal.Again, as I said, a great jumping off point for anyone interested in the field

We love this series: Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science. We homeschool, so this is a wonderful series for information gathering. Not only is the information easy to understand and apply, but a lot of the books include experiments or activities to reinforce the information. We check a lot of the series out at the library, but I'm glad to be adding a few of them to our home library.

Cute book! I bought this for my three year old and it was a little advanced for him. I think it’s better for kindergarten & up. The book explains the science behind leaves changing colors.

What a great story for a child who is learning to read. This is a great way to learn about trees and falling leaves. With m grandchildren in Florida, it was even more important to read and discuss this Fall "tradition". Therein followed family stories of living up north and how much fun this experience created for us. A great book for early readers, and those who don't experience Fall colors.

I'm a prayer partner with Kid's Hope USA for a student that my church sponsors, so I periodically buy penny plus postage books for him. Purchased to go along with our tree study unit for homeschooling. It's very informative but not overwhelmingly so. My 7 yr old enjoyed it. A great way to talk about the different types of leaves and trees and how the changing seasons affect them.

It s a little too advanced for my preschoolers. I would recommend it for first or second graders.
