Take the five stars in context of Delphi having no university textbooks published in the last twenty years or so. This book is well written and surprisingly relevant for current programmers taking up Delphi or Lazarus (like I am). Delphi code is very stable, unlike C++ or Python so I am having no problems using this book with RAD studio XE2 and Lazarus. You have to use the Lazarus feature to convert Delphi projects, of course. For one dollar, this book is the best deal on a computer book I have ever made. You have to roll with the old screenshots, but you have to expect some changes like that. Think of this book as mainly for the language and not the IDE and then it works just fine.

This is a fantastic book for newcomers to Delphi, but with a shortcoming for some potential readers:1. Kerman teaches not only Object Pascal/Delphi in a clear, concise progression, but also the basics in efficient design while solving real world implementation problems.2. Object Oriented Programming is integrated by the very nature of using Delphi objects, and later in the book, Kerman introduces additional Object Oriented Programming (OOP) fundamentals.3. Unlike nearly every other Delphi text I've read aimed at Delphi newcomers, this book ensures the reader learns, understands, and integrates efficient problem solving along the way.4. Finally, Kerman includes excellent exercises and quizzes to verify and challenge your learning in each chapter.5. My only negative critique (and the reason I only give the book four stars) is that the book does not include solutions to the end-of-chapter exercises and quizzes. (The solutions are located online for instructors only, which makes it difficult if you are teaching yourself). You also will not have access to the book's errata unless you complete online student registration with Addison/Wesley/Pearson Tech/(etc.). The reason this book is so expensive is because it's been adopted as a teaching text, and all textbooks are expensive because they can be. Sad but true.Having said that, I do not believe you'll find a better introduction to Delphi/Object Pascal anywhere.

I bought this book for my husband. Computers are his department in our house. He likes learning new things about computers. He tries many different operating systems, tons of different software, and uses multiple programming formats. This book was a good source for information for him.

This is a great book. It is really in depth and gave me everything I needed to know about Delphi.

Even though the book is a bit old (Explaining Delphi 5) but the principles of Delphi or Pascal programming are the strongest pillars of this book.In chapter 1: Kerman takes the learner into an introduction to computer science.Chapter 2: Delphi Development Environment (Delphi 5 IDE).Chapter 3: Planning your program (theories, flowchat, pseudocode).Chapter 4: Elements of Programming (variables, arithmetic operators ,,,)Chapter 5: Decision structures. (if then, booleans)Chapter 6: Repetition Structures. (loops)Chapter 7: Text Files.Chapter 8: Structured programming (subprograms, procedures and functions, passing parameters).Chapter 9: Error-Proofing and Debugging.Chapter 10: Data structures. (Arrays, static arrays, pointers ,,,)Chapter 11: Binary Files.Chapter 12: Sorting and searching.Chapter 13: Databases.Chapter 14: Recursion.Chapter 15: Object-Oriented Programming.Chapter 16: Additional delphi components.Chapter 17: Advanced delphi programming.Appendices:A. computer arithmetic and number systems.B. ASCII (ANSI) Character values.C. Object Pascal Programming standards.D. Customizing Delphi IDE (version 5)E. Distributing Delphi Programs.F. Object Pascal reserved words.G. Migrating from visual basic to Delphi << one of the book's top subjects. So, yeah I just disliked how the author didn't pay enough attention to functions in chapter 8, they are not well explained. But it's alright i can find plenty of resources on the internet about that. In addition, the CD that contains the solutions is not available and it is accessible to instructors only.Other than that, this book is a blessing. Finally, it depends from a learner to learner. Some want the up-to-date material explaining Delphi XE2 for example. This book is not for you, but If you are a newbie to delphi, then you have to read this book and another one which is more simple (Essential Pascal by Marco Cantu).

This book [was expensive to me] because it is a textbook, and as we all know, there's no getting around the price of a textbook. I'm not currently attending class, but purchased this book anyway. I found it extremely well laid out, very descriptive, and informative. I went from knowing very little about Delphi, to knowing quite a bit. This book has all the little bits of information the less formal books leave out. A great book! If I had one complaint, it was of the lack of attention to some of the higher programming skills, chapters like DDE were very short indeed, but gave you enough to know what they did. This is a beginners book, make no mistake. If you're just learning Delphi, it's great. I believe this was made with Delphi 5, but there are so few differences, you'll never notice.

This is a wonderful book for teaching teens about mindfulness. I think perhaps it is dummied down the way it was written though. I purchased the book with the hopes of using it for college age students but am unable to do so since it seems that it was written more for middle school level than even high school, so certainly not college age. But if you are looking for a workbook that explains mindfulness easily and with great exercises for practice, this book will work well.

I purchased this for a young teenage lady that has moved into our home. Unable to get her the counseling that she really needs...the closest I can get are these great workbooks. This book is written in a way that encourages teens to keep reading. Learning how to step back from the busy crazy world the teens live in now is not a task that a lot of teens know how to do. However, this book teaches them relaxing techniques. It has been great. The first of many workbooks we will be purchasing. Great tool for teens to learn to address the issues that they have buried. Thanks

Great resource! Excellent tools. I am using this in a class of middle schoolers.

If you are new to mindfulness, it might seem odd, but give these activities a try. You won't have regrets

I am so happy to get this book! definitely it is a great book to learn mindfulness and more!!

looks like a great, very helpful book for my anxious teen son who is interested in meditation.

This book is amazing and full of wonderful activities for my class. Well done.

We got a lot out of this book. I recommend downloading the audio files of meditations that go with it.

The book was exactly what I was looking for. It covers every single aspect of the Mayan civilization, with very good pictures, illustrations and texts. The map at the beginning of the book and the summary timeline at the end are also very useful during the reading for "when and where" awareness.

This is an amazing book! Well written and beautifully illustrated. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the Maya.

This is a fantistic book - but beware, it is the SAME book that was published in 2000 but with a different cover.

I now live in the heart of the Yucatan, where Mayan ruins "live"... awesome book!!

This is a great book!! The photos are spectacular and give an acurate view and impression of the ruins depicted. The text is interesting, factual, well thought out without being weighty.

Maya: Divine Kings of the Rain Forest is a general work about the Maya Indians of Central America. The book takes a sweeping overview of Maya civilization, including breakdowns of the different eras of Mayan culture and taking a look at the achievements of each era. There are chapters on Mayan architecture, Mayan writing, Mayan art. There are chapters on the Mayan languages and tribal groupings and chapters that describe Mayan religion and spirituality. This is a good introductory work that will acquaint the reader with all aspects of Mayan civilization and will talk a bit about the Maya today and how they live in Southern Mexico, Belize, Guatemala and Honduras.I heartily recommend this book to the newbie to Mayan culture who wants to get an overview of these Indians and their society. For those with more knowledge this work will not be as valuable, because it is a basic work and not specialized. If you read Michael Coe's excellent *The Maya*, you will get the same information as this book but not as detailed. This really is a superb introduction to Mayan culture and society and will cover all your bases as it educates and informs. The writing is very down to earth and easy to read, and the essays are all short and succinct. Good luck with this book!

This is simply a stunning anthology of essays, some obviously more scholarly than others. I know not what was wrong with the latest critic who carped that the material was simplistic: has he written a better book? In many cases, the totality of information available to us is simplistic! We do the best we can with the current limits of scientific scholarship & discipline. This is a breathtakingly handsome volume, profoundly richly illustrated, as well as a majestic coffee table book for those whose tastes run to the rather more scholarly than, "Classic Cars of Yesteryear; or, Coffee Grinders on Quartets of Wheels."

I almost purchased this book, but the table of contents looked awfully familiar. As another reviewer here pointed out, it was issued in 2000-2001 as THE MAYA: CULTURE & CIVILIZATION (CULTURAL STUDIES PHOTOGRAPHY) (see listing for this title here at Amazon) in a larger format with a different cover. I was looking forward to a 2012 revised edition at the very least, but this is not revised. It's a great book with some great articles and some that didn't particularly interest me. The photography is excellent, but the photos are larger in the 1st edition.

Did this book with the workbook and journal with a church group. First I want to say respectfully that I think it was good that Rick Warren and some of his congregation at his mega-church got healthier and I appreciate the effort. However, from a practical standpoint, I think this book falls very short. On the positive side, I got something out of the group I was in, sharing ideas and stories with others, altho most in my group weren't even overweight. I did get a few good things to ponder from a spiritual point of view. However, 6 weeks is rushing this whole thing. We were told several times this was just to get people started, well, what happens after that????The recipes were weird and expensive. I truly think since this book originated in CA somehow this food seems normal to them. I wasn't looking for yet another book on telling me what to eat and not to eat. I can't imagine for Thanksgiving my family would at all enjoy the light pumpkin bars made with tofu, is one example. Learn how to have a small piece of real pie and stop at that. As soon as I heard the words "gluten free" my brain shut down. This book is jumping on the gluten free bandwagon, that I believe is really over rated and a myth for most people. Cut out dairy was another thing I read in the book. Another turn off for me, yet another fad. They do a "move of the week", which in theory sounds good as many probably don't exercise at all. But you better know your limitations because some of them could get you hurt. Same with the exercises in the book. I just don't recommend this book as a guide for exercise if you aren't already fit.I have read other faith based books much better than this, that use God's word to attempt to teach you to live normally.I was pretty disappointed, in general , with the whole thing.

I liked this book very much. It's so holistic and comprehensive and it makes so much sense!First of all, The Daniel Plan was in complete agreement with my personal experience and what I studied about health and fitness. Which, BTW, is so rare. Many health "gurus" toot only their own horn that their system/diet/workout regimen is wonderful, and everything else is for people too dumb to see the truth. The Daniel Plan preaches its own system, but this system is holistic and it excludes very little. But most importantly, it's darn effective in the lives of everyday people. The plan is based on five F-essentials. While some of them are pretty obvious - like Food and Fitness, others are not so - like Faith and Focus. And only all five put together create a powerful mixture that can skyrocket your health. I think this is the biggest strength of this book - it combines all the elements and doesn't leave them hanging in a void.Diets and fitness have been discussed in the context of weight loss and health zillions of times. The Daniel Plan discusses them as well and I found the most flaws in those parts, but it also put them in the context of faith, focus and friends, which makes the whole plan more down to earth, practical, and most importantly - effective. For example, let’s take "friends" essential. I met with a serious study done for "American Journal of Preventive Medicine" that concluded simple tactics like 'move more, eat less' are more effective than professional weight loss group programs. But a group program is not a pack of friends. While accountability considered in a void may be less important than simple tactics, accountability PLUS the right tactics make all the difference.OK, as usual in my reviews, let's go to cons first. They are few and far between, but The Daniel Plan is not all rainbows and unicorns.1. Preachy.Unfortunately, The Daniel Plan falls, in a few areas, into the typical 'healthy books' narration: "You'd better listen to this advice to the T or anguish, hell and damnation awaits you!" Well, not in those words, but you can clearly read it between the lines. The detailed fitness and diet advice provided with the tone of an oracle doesn't work for me and doesn't work for many critical-thinking people.I agreed with at least 90% of what the authors had to say about fitness and diet, but the remaining 10% spoiled a bit the pleasure of reading.I consider regular cardio completely useless and you cannot convince me otherwise, because it's against my experience. For the last 10 years, I avoided it like a plague, and I am usually the fittest specimen in any group that does not include fitness professionals. The same goes with other advice given in magisterial tones. One example that struck me the most was: "Sleep 8 hours a night." Period. No discussion. And it's terrible advice. Yes, probably 60% of the population will thrive sleeping 8 hours a night. But what about the rest?Sleep needs are individual. Matthew McConaughey sleeps 8.5 hours a night. I took a lot of effort to assess the optimal amount of sleep for me, and it's 7 to 7.5 hours a night. If I sleep 8 hours, I wake up with a headache every single time. It's too much for me.There are more of such unconditional tips within the book, hidden like raisins in a cake. Unfortunately, they give a foul taste to an otherwise very good book.2. Self-promotional.One of my friends remarked that the book wasn't content-rich enough for him, and I get what he meant. There are plenty of readers' and plan participants' stories smuggled into the book.I totally get the intention of the authors. These stories prove that the plan is not tailored to a few very special individuals, but a lot of everyday folks can benefit from it.I wasn't disgusted by the number or content of those stories. Whenever I felt like they were standing in my way to further parts of the book, I simply skipped them. But for some readers, interested in "how-to" content, it may be a bit too much. Be warned.PROSAnd this is as far as cons go. There are many more pros in "The Daniel Plan."1. Faith. This is a silver bullet of motivation, if you are a believer. If you put your physical transformation into the context of your Christian faith, it disarms you from each and every excuse.I didn't find it in any other 'health book,' and I read quite a lot of them.I was struggling with my weight for years. Well, I didn't even struggle; I neglected my weight and my health. Only when I admitted that God wants more from me than just to get by did I find the motivation to become a fitness machine, lose 15% of my body weight and become healthy for good. For a believer, there is no better motivator than faith.2. Food.Yeah, I complained above about food advice... but only about 10%. The rest was ideally congruent with my experience and studies that I trusted. One important point - eat unprocessed foods - and it deals with 80% of dietary problems.3. Fitness.Move more is the name of the game. I liked a lot the variety of activities that "The Daniel Plan" prescribes. The fitness industry conditioned us to think that if you don't go to a gym or spend hours on the road (running, cycling, etc.) you don't exercise. Bollocks! Playing with your kids is an exercise and better than most at that.I also liked the emphasis on bodyweight exercises. You can do them anywhere, anytime -- and even a few minutes, if done intensively, can break a sweat and provide all benefits connoted with long trainings.4. Focus.I consider it a very strong point of the book. This area is rarely mentioned in other books and usually treated as an afterthought or an ornament. Not so in "The Daniel Plan." There is so much more in health than eating right and moving your butt. Jim Rohn called it "a healthy attitude." I found all the tactics mentioned in the book - more laughter, stress-reducing habits, prayer and better sleep - exactly in accordance with my personal experience. The book is worth its price just for this section.5. Friends.Accountability is an important factor in achieving one's goals, but "The Daniel Plan" takes it to another level. The true potential of the plan was generated in those small groups of friends who worked together on common goals. The book doesn't tell about simple accountability. What is understood by "friends" here, means the mastermind. A few or several people who brainstorm and work together to reach the specific outcome. People who simultaneously care about you and are detached enough from your daily drama to provide unbiased external insight.I was blown away by multiple examples of how a small group of friends decided to implement The Daniel Plan. That's how masterminds work. They produce their own solution to their own situations. They generate ideas and implement them without external supervision.6. Holistic. This book includes everything which is good or great about getting healthy and keeping it that way. Yes, there are some questionable tips here and there, especially when applied to an individual. But every pinch of good advice is here as well. In the last few years, I improved my health immensely, and I found all the tactics I used, some even subconsciously, in this book.In Summary:I recommend this book wholeheartedly. The less you know about getting healthy, the more profitable it will be for you. The more your health is in shambles, despite your knowledge, the more you will benefit from reading and APPLYING it.I identify with the book's message so much, that I could've become a certified Daniel Plan's coach tomorrow if they have a relevant program. ;)The best thing you can do with "The Daniel Plan" is to read it and tailor it to your individual situation. Not all recipes will fit your lifestyle. Not all exercises will be doable or wise in your circumstances. Don't worry, this book is like a buffet meal: you don't have to eat everything. In fact, it will do you most good if you pick only something here and there.Only one thing is obligatory in applying the book's advice: don't neglect any of the five essentials. The plan is based on them. Miss one and the whole plan will crumble.Faith, focus, foods, fitness and friends; everything is necessary to maintain your wellbeing for good.

From the book cover:The Daniel Plan: 40 Days to a Healthier Life by Rick Warren, Dr. Daniel Amen, and Dr. Mark Hyman is far more than a diet plan. It is an appetizing approach to achieving a healthy lifestyle where people are encouraged to get healthier together by optimizing the key five essentials of faith, food, fitness, focus, and friends. The Daniel Plan does, indeed, center around those five essentials:Faith - "If you don't trust God to help you get healthy, all you are left with is willpower--and you know from experience that willpower doesn't usually last very long. You get tired of doing what's right and you give up."Food - "Food has the power to heal us. It is the most potent tool we have to help prevent and treat many of our chronic diseases--including diabetes and obesity. Truly, what you put on your fork dictates whether you are sick or well, slim or fat, depleted or energized."Fitness - "[H]e walked her through these steps that make fitness doable in The Daniel Plan: dreaming big, discovering what moves you, setting and recording goals, mixing it up, and finding a buddy."Focus - "[I]t is the loss of focus that causes may people to cycle through hopeful starts and many failed stops as other things vie for their attention. We will help you optimize your brain health, renew your mind, increase your focus, and live with a purpose-driven mind-set. All of the information in this book is designed to help you win the war between the thoughtful part of your brain that knows what you should do and your pleasure centers that always want gratification now."Friends - "When you have friends to go with you on the journey toward better health, you are more likely to succeed. Life change happens in small groups."I had heard much about The Daniel Plan, but this is the first time I've looked into it in any depth. In fact, a friend had mentioned it just a day or two before I saw it on the list of books available for review. That's why I decided to go for it.I was a bit disappointed to see that the first endorsement on the back cover is from Dr. Mehmet Oz. I'll say that I'm not a fan and leave it at that.Still, I was hopeful as I started reading. This is what I wrote to a friend about two weeks ago, when I'd read about a third of the book:I've been reading The Daniel Plan, and I think I like the plan better than the book itself. I keep getting annoyed at the writers for a condescending tone, a reliance on the same handful of familiar Bible verses over and over, an emphasis on saving the environment through what we eat, and the assumption that we can get locally sourced foods all year. (Sure, Rick Warren lives in California. Most of us don't.) Other than that, I'm loving the book. :)Those annoyances seemed to fade as the book progressed. By the end of the book I had mixed opinions about it.I completely agree with the Faith essential. I've tried to diet and have had no long-term success. I believe that by trusting God instead of my own willpower, I would do much better.I like the concepts mentioned in the above quote about Food. Some aspects of the plan make sense--things like filling your plate with 50% non-starchy vegetables, 25% whole grains or starchy vegetables, and 25% lean proteins. Keeping healthy snacks on hand so we don't reach for junk food makes sense. Don't drink liquid sugar calories: that's logical. Giving up artificial sweeteners, which confuse our brains and make us crave sweets, sounds like a good strategy. However, I thought that the black-and-white rules about what to avoid, especially, were extreme. "Cut out sugar and white flour. Go cold turkey." No oils except extra-virgin olive oil, extra-virgin coconut oil, grape seed oil, avocado oil, and sesame oil (for flavoring). In my opinion, these absolute rules and lists of "bad foods" and "good foods" tend to make us feel guilty when we fail. The diet plan is very specific, particularly in the Detox phase. Menu plans for three meals and two snacks per day are spelled out, and they include foods that my family would never touch: chia coconut brown rice breakfast bowl, quinoa breakfast bake, shrimp curry with snap peas and water chestnuts. The Core meal plan is a little better and it offers options to swap out meals and snacks. Still, it's pretty specific, and I seriously, seriously doubt that my family would be on board with this. The Fitness essential, on the other hand, I like. The plan offers options for fun exercises, like dancing, hula hooping, pogo stick, table tennis, tag, unicycling ... you get the idea. It also meets you where you are: someone new to exercise isn't expected to start with a 20-minute run. It combines aerobic, stretching, and strength exercises. I would adopt this part of the plan even if I didn't use the rest. The chapters on Focus address three strategies--brain envy (you have to passionately care about your brain), avoiding anything that hurts it, and engaging in habits that boost its health. Specifics include getting enough sleep, reducing stress, praying, and laughing more. The section also talks about failure and how to turn it into a learning experience. I liked this quote: "Failure can also be motivational. A lot of times we change, not when we see the light, but when we feel the heat."I can't argue with the Friends essential. Have an exercise buddy and a friend (or friends) to keep you accountable. I can see myself in a support group to talk about progress and strategies, but I don't think I could say, "I weigh xxx pounds."So ... I know this is long, but I hope I've given you enough information to make your own decision about The Daniel Plan.Disclosure: I received a copy of this book, at no cost to me, for review purposes. I was not required to write a positive review, and all opinions I've shared are my own.

Now & Again: Go-To Recipes, Inspired Menus + Endless Ideas for Reinventing Leftovers, by Julia Turshen

Review

"I am so excited about this book because Julia is very, very good at throwing unpretentious, cozy meals together and I know this because I've been shamelessly stalking her plates and picnics on social media for years, hoping to glean ideas. This book will save me a lot of snooping in the future and I don't care that it's only August, I'm making the Not-Kosher Jewish Christmas menu first." -DEB PERELMANA Washington Post Best cookbook of 2018!A Goodreads Choice Award nominee for Best Cookbook 2018"Now & Again is a kitchen essential tool. Julia Turshen shares a definitive plan to help you think differently about leftovers with delicious recipes the first time and second time around."-CARLA HALL"No one is better than Turshen at coming up with unpretentious, delicious, and approachable recipes for home cooks of varying skill levels. An essential purchase for circulating cookbook collections."—Stephanie Klose, Library Journal Starred Review "Let's be honest. If all you're looking for is a recipe, the internet's got you covered. But if like me you read a cookbook to make friends over food with the person who wrote it, then Now & Again is perfect. Julia's personal stories, approachable recipes, and conversational tone suggest that you're sitting at her kitchen counter shelling peas or peeling carrots. She makes you feel like you're a part of things. Plus Julia sheds light on two skills I need to hone: reinventing leftovers and delegating." -VIVIAN HOWARD"Julia invites us to broaden our taste buds with her fresh, approachable, never-fussy cooking. Now & Again leaves no dish and no one behind: garlicky shrimp with tequila and lime will turn the next day to shrimp and kimchi pancakes; cucumbers with sumac and warm pita are a no-brainer for even the most novice of cooks; matzo ball soup and Passover tradition aren't abandoned; and a wife's birthday cake will leave no spouse unsatisfied." -YOTAM OTTOLENGHI"Julia Turshen's new book is a rich compendium of recipes that are reassuringly do-able, full of inviting flavour, designed to make life easier and bring pleasure to the kitchen as much as to the table. This would be quite enough, but added to this, Turshen elaborates on the recipes, adding advice as to how the various components of a recipe can be tweaked and turned into other dishes and - this is always a joy to the home cook - how leftovers can be refashioned into further meals."—Nigella Lawson, author of At My Table

#16,661 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I am a huge fan of Julia's first cookbook, Small Victories, and it's now a go-to present for friends and family members of all cooking levels. I pre-ordered Now and Again and am once again thrilled. As always, her recipes are well-written and include thoughtful attention to detail for cooks who want to feed themselves and the folks they love without wasting food or money. I appreciated her creative interpretations of leftovers (e.g., the cauliflower and leftover salad soup) that encourage us to think a little differently or deliberately about what we cook. It's also always nice to know I'm not the only one who makes meatloaf just so she can have meatloaf sandwiches the next day!Everything I have made so far (including the kale and pepita salad, the applesauce cake, Italian flag pasta bake, confetti meatloaf, eggs with coconut cilantro sauce, beef and zucchini meatballs) will stay in rotation for our household, and I'm looking forward to cooking through the rest of the book!

I already have dozens of cookbooks and mostly rely on the internet for new recipes these days but after hearing an interview with the author on a podcast (The Sporkful?), I was very interested in her book. I literally read it like a novel, from cover to cover. Each chapter is a full meal/menu and then has suggestions about how to use various leftovers. At the back she has a "List of 7's" with lists of 7 ways to use leftover rice, 7 ways to use leftover produce, leftover snacks, etc. It's a really great book for the frugal foodie who doesn't like to see food go to waste and wants to be creative doing it.

This is not a book about leftovers as much as it is about entertaining. Now and Again is structured by entire meal - about 3-4 dishes that can work for groups of 4-6. Worry not if you're only two, because the book also includes extremely clever tips for using leftovers.I made an Italian lunch from the book, which included a baked ziti with ground turkey and creamy spinach mixed in, toasts with anchovy/garlic butter, and an arugula salad with pine nuts and lemon. The combination was a huge crowd pleaser, and the recipes were a joy - simple, no fuss, and no crazed steps. Very difficult to screw up.At the end, about half the salad was leftover. Each meal has tips for leftovers, and in this case the author suggested I blend the arugula salad with garlic, olive oil, and salt to make pesto. And, well, it made a delicious pesto. From soggy salad to delicious pesto with hardly any effort - genius. This book is brilliant in its simplicity. Easy to make yet impressive meals with no waste at the end. No need to think about what dishes to combine to form a meal - it's all planned out for you. I own about 30 cookbooks and this is my new favorite.

This is my third book by Julia (the author)! She's a wonderful writer and the recipes are so easy to make. If you're looking for a cookbook that you will grab often when you want to spice up your leftovers, this is the book. You might also look for FEED the Resistance Cookbook if you want a cookbook with a cause attached to it! You will not regret getting these cookbook! The ”Seven List” in this book is the best addition! All cookbooks should be required to have this :-)

One of the best cookbooks I’ve come across. The meals are amazing. We have a cookbook Club and we’ve been doing it for two years. We still talk about Turshens Small Victories Cookbook which was our first meeting. She again turned out an AMAZING cookbook. I’m sold she’s one of the best out there - a modern day ina!

This book has been living in our coffee table since Sept 4th when it arrived. I've read through it, my kids have read through it (they picked the chocolate cake to be out first recipe) and even my mom (who would rather make reservations for dinner) read through it (she liked the no fuss feel if the meals). Cookbooks are great coffee table books. This one shines because it not only has delightful recipes and delicious photos, but also because it tells a story that anyone can be a part of.Thanks @turshen for another great way to bring us all together. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Turshen invites you in from start to finish on how to prepare a meal for friends and family, and then follows you through the steps on making that same meal into subsequent dinners. Its inviting, easy to follow, and thorough. The meals are interesting and delicous!

I love Julia’s writing style and of course her recipes are no-fuss, often weeknight friendly. Many of the leftover ideas are sandwiches or quesadillas, but more importantly she empowers you to get creative and think outside the box. Along with Small Victories, a must have kitchen resource

Review

"This is the untold story of how one of the world's most popular websites was hatched--and how it took on a mind of its own. It's a gripping read, and it's full of lessons for building startups and organizing communities."―Adam Grant, New York Times bestselling author of Originals, Give and Take, and Option B with Sheryl Sandberg"We Are the Nerds is the best, grittiest, most accurate book yet about what it's like to build a startup and a community from scratch (a struggle I know well). And it's a great story; truly fun to read! Lagorio-Chafkin takes us back to a formative time for the modern web, helping us understand what can go wrong--and right!--when we try to harness the power of online community (and make money along the way)."―John Zeratsky, former design partner, Google Ventures, and New York Times bestselling author of Sprint and Make Time"I've heard every start-up story you can imagine, but Reddit's is as fascinating as it gets. Christine has captured what it really looks like to start a company and turned Reddit's struggle for success into a gripping, entertaining book that is a must-read for every entrepreneur."―Daymond John, star of ABC's Shark Tank, bestselling author of Rise and Grind, and founder of FUBU"Lagorio-Chafkin's book is incisive, witty, and brilliantly written. She gives you a front-row seat to the world-altering consequences of the decisions made by a cast of compelling, though sometimes stumbling, humans on the front lines of the Internet--nerds and all."―Emily Chang, author of the national bestseller Brotopia"Christine Lagorio-Chafkin has stepped into a male-centric genre, the start-up narrative, and produced a book of monumental power and importance: a rich, thoughtful chronicle of Reddit that grapples just as brilliantly with the dark side of tech--its trolls, its problems with gender and diversity--as it does its culture-shattering innovations. I was wowed by this book."―Liza Mundy, New York Times bestselling author of Michelle and Code Girls"Excellent.... Learn how the internet's front page got its mojo back."―Business Insider"A classic 'we were coders once, and young' tale.... Lagorio-Chafkin fearlessly explores Reddit's dark edges."―Wall Street Journal"Really three tales in one ... that of a scrappy start-up destined for web domination,... [the] technologists, entrepreneurs and iconoclasts seeking to reshape the world, ... [and] the rise of social media from the perspective of one of its most important players.... The reader feels like Forrest Gump, stumbling from one remarkable event or person to the next... We Are the Nerds describes how Reddit began. The real story is how the site and its ilk will change the world. On that, we're still in Act One."―Nature"Fascinating.... . Drawing on dozens of original interviews with Reddit's founders and employees, old chat logs and photographs and e-mails, Lagorio-Chafkin .... re-creates key moments in novelistic detail.... Sharply written and brilliantly reported, We Are the Nerds is an eye-opening look at how Reddit helped shape contemporary Internet and political culture in the United States."―Shelf Awareness (starred review)"Lagorio-Chafkin's assured narrative makes even crashing servers the stuff suspense thrillers are made of."―Mental Floss

I always wondered what it would be like to start a tech company that became a huge success. Now I know! This book makes me feel like I'm really there. The writing pulls you into the story, with characters and situations that are so interesting, it reads like a novel. As a tech person, I have friends who started less successful companies. As I read, I tried to figure out the difference between what they went through and what the Reddit people went through. It turns out there are a lot of similarities. The main difference is the amount of money and fame, both of which are mixed blessings. In an odd way, this makes me happier with my life.(Note to reviewers: Don't use the name of the book, or your review will be rejected by the bad language filter.)

So engrossing, especially for a nonfiction work. I absolutely loved it and at times couldn’t put it down. A seamless blend of fact, narrative, color and fascinating tidbits. Highly recommended!

Great writing, great reporting. I’ve always had trouble grasping what Reddit actually was, and this book explained it via an engrossing and entertaining story. Can’t recommend “We Are the Nerds” enough!

Basic Premise: The history of the website Reddit -- from its founding to the present day.Short Plot Synopsis: This book tracks the founding of Reddit and follows its founders (Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian) through the site's infancy, trouble adolescence and (hopefully) long adult life. The Good:* I never visited Reddit before reading this book (in fact, I didn't fully understand what Reddit was exactly), yet I was completely interested the entire time I was reading this book. I think that's always a good sign, don't you?* The book is easy to read and you get invested in learning about the people involved in making Reddit and in the site's continued life. The fact that Reddit was involved in so many different cultural "zeitgeist" moments makes it feel fresh and relevant. You'll realize that you knew more about Reddit than you thought.* As I mentioned before, you don't have to have any interest or experience with Reddit to enjoy this book. It isn't overly technical, but I do think it presents an inside view of what goes into the making of sites like these: the hours of time, the accidental nature of how a decision made on the fly can have ramifications down the road, how interconnected tech companies are. (It seems like every friend of Huffman and Ohanian founded another website that is in regular use today.) The book also presents a lot of food for thought about what constitutes free speech and how much it needs to be protected. Due to Reddit's freeform "open" nature, it led it to become a breeding ground for some pretty controversial and ugly subreddits. It makes you think about the struggle that the site faces and continues to face: how much should it let these groups flourish? For this reason, I think this book is about a lot more than the story of Reddit. It becomes a book about freedom of speech and where the limits of that freedom should be.The Bad:* Some pretty nasty groups found a home and a voice on Reddit, and the books covers many of these controversial groups and discussions -- getting into subject matter that some might find offensive. For this reason, I would recommend caution when reading the book. If you're easily offended, you might find some of the subject matter in this book to be disturbing.* I found that I just wanted more ... more details, more follow-up on particular stories. I felt like the book could have been longer -- but that is just because I became so engrossed in some of the stories and wanted to find out more. It wasn't a failing of the author -- she just had a lot of good material and had to tell the story she was telling and couldn't go down every rabbit hole she found.* You'll find yourself wasting even more time online than you do now if you weren't already familiar with Reddit. I found myself going onto the site to see what it was all about and spending way more time on it than I should have. It feels a bit addictive in a way.* I would have loved to see some photos. (Note: I received an early review copy of the book via Amazon Vine so perhaps the finished book will include photos.) I found myself Googling many of the people mentioned in the book to find out more about them.Final Thoughts: This was a fascinating read, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was educational, informative and thought-provoking. I actually read this book because my husband wanted to read it but didn't want to have to write a review of it so I agreed to read it. I'm so glad I did!

I can't believe this isn't (yet) spelled out more clearly in any of the marketing materials, but this is a **biography** about Reddit's founders, rather than an exploration of Reddit itself. I'm a fan of popular science books and business/marketing books, and things that examine the dynamics of online phenomena (like Reagle's "Don't Read the Comments" book about the marketplace of online reviews), or in-person shopping trends (like more people turn right after entering a store than turn left), but that's not what this book does--it's a biography about Reddit's founders. If you're expecting an exploration of the dark corners of Reddit and how human behavior plays out at scale, this isn't the right book for you. If you're wanting a biography about the founders (with all those "real details" like what brand of snack foods they ate in college), then read on...

I am not a Redditor, but I think I might give it a try after reading this book. I'm not interested in disgusting porn or horrible racist rants. Nor am I particularly interested in photos of cats that look like Hitler. But millions of serious people write interesting things on Reddit, and, while it might take me a while to get the hang of it, I think it will probably be fun to read along. This is the story of Reddit's birth, infancy, teenage meltdown, mature growth, mid-life crisis, and recovery, if indeed it has recovered. The book's full of great anecdotes and, for those of us somewhat outside the .com world, it gives interesting background on some of the characters we see in the tech news today.Back in the day I was on the fringes of the free speech movement and I was particularly interested in how the debate within and about Reddit has evolved. Although I don't like the long subtitle tacked onto this book, Reddit has really been a free speech laboratory. When and how should speech be restricted? Reddit, and other social media platforms deal with this every day and the argument is fascinating.Ms Lagorio-Chafkin's writing is clear and free of unneeded jargon. Although the book is fairly long, the story progresses quickly. I enjoyed it quite a bit.I received a review copy of "We Are the Nerds: The Birth and Tumultuous Life of Reddit, the Internet's Culture Laboratory" by Christine Lagorio-Chafkin (Hachette) through NetGalley.com.
